RICHMOND, Va. — William & Mary men's soccer senior goalkeeper Diego Garciarena was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman forward Brown Huffard earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors for the third consecutive week, the league announced Monday.
The duo helped William & Mary earn a 2-0 victory over College of Charleston on Saturday at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. The win improved the Tribe to 2-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in CAA play.
Garciarena turned in his best performance of the season in goal, recording a season-high five saves while keeping the Cougars off the scoreboard. The senior played all 90 minutes and stopped all five shots on goal he faced to secure W&M's first shutout of the season.
The clean sheet was Garciarena's first as a member of the Tribe and the sixth of his collegiate career. He came up big down the stretch, making three saves over an eight-minute span late in the second half to preserve W&M's two-goal advantage.
Huffard continued his impressive start to his collegiate career by scoring the game-winning goal against Charleston. The McLean, Va., native broke the scoreless tie just over three minutes into the second half, finishing a feed from Sullivan Carter at the 48:07 mark to put the Tribe in front.
The goal was Huffard's team-leading third of the season and his first game-winning tally. He finished the match with two shots, including one on goal.
Huffard has now claimed each of the CAA's first three Rookie of the Week awards of the 2026 season. He earned the honor following W&M's 4-1 victory over Radford after recording his first collegiate goal and assist before repeating the honor last week after scoring just 1:35 into the Tribe's 1-1 draw at Elon.
Through the first five matches of his collegiate career, Huffard leads the Tribe with three goals and seven points while adding an assist.
William & Mary returns to action Saturday, Sept. 12, traveling to Wilmington, N.C., to face UNCW in CAA action. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m., and the match will be streamed on FloCollege.
