WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary men's soccer returns to nonconference action Tuesday afternoon, traveling to Washington, D.C., to face American.
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m., with the match streamed live on ESPN+.
THE TRIBE. William & Mary enters Tuesday at 4-4-1 overall following a 2-1 CAA victory over Campbell on Saturday at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. The win improved the Tribe to 2-1-1 in conference play and 3-1 at home this season.
Senior Gabe Ruitenberg opened the scoring against the Camels with his third goal of the season before sophomore Alex Garrison found the back of the net for his team-leading fourth goal of the year.
The Tribe has scored 19 goals through nine matches, averaging 2.11 per contest. W&M has put 43 of its 100 shots on goal.
RUITENBERG AT THE TOP. Ruitenberg enters Tuesday as William & Mary's leader with 10 points on three goals and four assists.
The senior has recorded a point in three consecutive matches, scoring the game-winning goal at UMBC, assisting on the Tribe's lone goal at No. 15 Old Dominion and finding the back of the net against Campbell.
Ruitenberg has attempted a team-high 21 shots this season and leads the Green and Gold with 11 shots on goal.
GARRISON FINDS THE NET. Garrison scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season in Saturday's victory over Campbell.
The sophomore's goal in the 61st minute gave W&M a 2-0 advantage and ultimately stood as the game winner. It marked his second game-winning goal of the season.
Garrison enters Tuesday with nine points on four goals and an assist. His four goals have come on just 11 shots, including six attempts on goal.
GATCHELL SETTING THE TABLE. Freshman Aidan Gatchell picked up his team-leading fifth assist of the season on Garrison's game-winning goal against Campbell.
Gatchell has recorded an assist in each of the Tribe's last two matches, including four of the last five, and enters Tuesday tied with Garrison for second on the team with nine points. The freshman has two goals and five assists through his first nine collegiate matches.
Gatchell and freshman Brown Huffard have combined for five goals, six assists and 16 points this season. Huffard has three goals and an assist for seven points.
SECOND-HALF SUCCESS. William & Mary continues to do the majority of its offensive damage after halftime.
The Tribe has scored 13 of its 19 goals in the second half while attempting 60 of its 100 shots over the final 45 minutes. W&M has outscored its opponents 13-11 after halftime this season.
Both goals in Saturday's victory over Campbell came in the second half, with Ruitenberg scoring in the 50th minute before Garrison doubled the advantage in the 61st.
THE EAGLES. American enters Tuesday at 1-4-3 overall and 1-0-1 in Patriot League play.
The Eagles have scored three goals while allowing 11 this season. American has recorded three shutouts, including a 1-0 road victory over Colgate and scoreless draws against Rutgers and Delaware.
Sebastian Garces, Patryk Rojek and Chris Sullivan have each found the back of the net for the Eagles. Sullivan leads American with 11 shots, including eight on goal.
Goalkeeper Evan Tubbs has started all eight matches for American, recording 30 saves, a .732 save percentage and a 1.38 goals-against average. Tubbs has posted three shutouts.
TRIBE VS. EAGLES. William & Mary holds a 23-10-4 advantage in the all-time series against American.
The Tribe has won four consecutive meetings in the series, including a 1-0 victory over the Eagles last season on Sept. 30 in Williamsburg.
W&M's most recent victory over American in Washington, D.C., came on Sept. 19, 2009, when the Tribe earned a 2-0 road win.
NONCONFERENCE ACTION. Tuesday marks William & Mary's sixth nonconference match of the season.
W&M enters the contest at 2-3 in nonconference action, earning victories over Radford and UMBC.
The Tribe has additional nonconference matches remaining against Howard, Navy and North Carolina later this season.
The Tribe has played five matches away from Williamsburg this season and owns a 1-3-1 road record. W&M earned its road victory with a 2-1 comeback win at UMBC on Sept. 19.
WHAT'S NEXT. William & Mary returns to Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Saturday, Oct. 3, hosting Elon in CAA action. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. as W&M celebrates its Hispanic Heritage Match.
The Elon contest begins a three-match homestand for the Tribe.
