WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary men's soccer returns to Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Saturday evening, hosting Campbell in CAA action.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m., with the match streamed live on FloCollege. The Tribe will celebrate Senior Day and GKC Day as part of Saturday's contest.
Clear Bag Policy and Metal Detectors
Furthering its commitment to a first class and secure environment at home athletic events, William & Mary has implemented the use of walk-through metal detectors at the entrances to athletic venues (both ticketed and non-ticketed events). This enhanced security method mirrors standard practice at most major professional and intercollegiate athletic events throughout the country and compliments the Clear Bag Policy already in place. Fans will proceed through metal detectors prior to having their tickets scanned or entering a venue for non-tickets events. Entrants will not need to remove items such as belts, cell phones, coins, jackets, jewelry, watches, wallets, shoes or other small objects. If additional screening is necessary, security staff will ask the individual to proceed to a secondary screening area, where they will be asked to divest themselves of certain items and pass through again until clear.
THE TRIBE. William & Mary enters Saturday at 3-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in CAA play following a narrow 2-1 setback at No. 15 Old Dominion on Tuesday night.
Junior Thor Sigurjonsson scored his first goal of the season against the Monarchs, finding the back of the net in the first half. Senior Gabe Ruitenberg and freshman Aidan Gatchell eached picked up their team-leading fourths assist of the year on the tally.
The Tribe has scored 17 goals through eight matches, averaging 2.13 per contest. W&M has put 40 of its 89 shots on goal and has scored 11 of its 17 goals in the second half.
GATCHELL, RUITENBERG LEAD THE WAY. Gatchell and Ruitenberg enter Saturday tied for the team lead with eight points apiece.
Gatchell has recorded two goals and four assists through the first eight matches of his collegiate career, while Ruitenberg has also tallied two goals and four helpers. Ruitenberg owns one of the Tribe's three game-winning goals this season.
Sophomore Alex Garrison and freshman Brown Huffard sit just behind them with seven points apiece. Garrison and Huffard share the team lead with three goals each.
FRESHMEN MAKING AN IMPACT. Gatchell and Huffard have combined for 15 points through the Tribe's opening eight matches.
Gatchell leads W&M with four assists and shares the team lead with eight points, while Huffard has three goals and an assist for seven points. Huffard earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors in each of the first three weeks of the season.
Together, the freshman duo has accounted for five of W&M's 17 goals and five of its 17 assists.
THOR BREAKS THROUGH. Sigurjonsson found the back of the net for the first time this season Tuesday at ODU.
The junior now has three points on a goal and an assist in four appearances. He has attempted seven shots, placing three on goal.
SECOND-HALF SUCCESS. William & Mary has continued to generate the majority of its offense after halftime.
The Tribe has scored 11 of its 17 goals in the second half compared to six in the opening 45 minutes. W&M has also attempted 52 of its 89 shots after halftime.
BACK IN THE 'BURG. Saturday marks William & Mary's first home match since its 2-0 victory over College of Charleston on Sept. 5.
The Tribe has played five of its last six matches away from Williamsburg, including three consecutive road contests against UNCW, UMBC and the Monarchs before returning home Saturday. W&M owns a 2-1 record at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field this season.
THE CAMELS. Campbell enters Saturday at 0-7-1 overall and 0-3 in CAA play. The Camels are coming off a scoreless draw against Winthrop on Tuesday, their first result of the season.
Campbell has scored six goals through eight matches while allowing 16. The Camels are averaging 8.3 shots per match and have put 30 of their 66 attempts on goal.
Jayco Castro leads Campbell with two goals and shares the team lead with four points. Augustus Squillace has a goal and a team-high two assists for four points, while Xander Martin has added a goal and an assist.
The Camels have been involved in a number of tight contests this season. Five of their seven losses have come by a single goal, including a 2-1 setback to UNCW in their most recent CAA match.
TRIBE VS. CAMELS. William & Mary holds a 5-4 advantage in the all-time series against Campbell.
The Camels have won the last four meetings between the programs, including both matchups last season. Campbell earned a 2-1 victory in Buies Creek on Aug. 29 before taking a 4-0 decision in Williamsburg on Oct. 11.
W&M's most recent victory in the series came in 2017.
Saturday marks the first of two meetings between the teams this season. William & Mary travels to Buies Creek for the return matchup on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 6 p.m.
BACK TO CAA PLAY. William & Mary returns to conference action Saturday after playing consecutive nonconference matches against UMBC and Old Dominion.
The Tribe enters the weekend at 1-1-1 in CAA play. W&M opened its league slate with a 1-1 draw at Elon before earning a 2-0 home victory over College of Charleston and suffering a 2-1 setback at UNCW.
