WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary men's soccer concludes its road swing Tuesday evening, traveling to Norfolk, Va., for a nonconference matchup against No. 13 Old Dominion.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m., with the match streamed live on ESPN+.
THE TRIBE. William & Mary enters Tuesday at 3-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in CAA play following a 2-1 comeback victory at UMBC on Saturday night.
The Tribe erased a 1-0 halftime deficit with a pair of goals in a span of 2:22 during the second half. Freshman Aidan Gatchell equalized in the 66th minute with his second goal of the season before senior Gabe Ruitenberg converted a penalty kick at the 67:42 mark for the game winner.
The victory marked W&M's first road win since a 2-0 victory at Stony Brook on Nov. 2, 2024.
William & Mary has scored 16 goals through seven matches, averaging 2.29 per contest. The Tribe has done much of its damage after halftime, scoring 11 of its 16 goals in the second half.
FOUR AT THE TOP. Four different Tribe players enter Tuesday tied for the team lead with seven points.
Sophomore Alex Garrison and freshman Brown Huffard have each scored a team-high three goals and added an assist. Gatchell and Ruitenberg have each totaled two goals and a team-leading three assists.
Garrison and Huffard have each recorded a game-winning goal, while Ruitenberg's winner at UMBC was his first of the season.
FRESHMAN IMPACT. Gatchell enters Tuesday coming off his second goal of the season after sparking the Tribe's comeback at UMBC.
The freshman has recorded seven points on two goals and three assists through his first seven collegiate matches. He is tied for the team lead in assists and points.
Huffard has also made an immediate impact during his freshman campaign. The three-time CAA Rookie of the Week has three goals and an assist for seven points, including the game winner in W&M's 2-0 victory over College of Charleston.
SECOND-HALF SURGE. William & Mary has been at its best offensively following halftime this season.
The Tribe has scored 11 of its 16 goals in the second half while attempting 51 of its 85 shots over the final 45 minutes. W&M and its opponents have each scored five first-half goals, while the Tribe holds an 11-9 advantage in the second half.
That trend continued Saturday at UMBC, when W&M scored both of its goals after halftime to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory.
DIEGO IN NET. Diego Garciarena has started all seven matches in goal for William & Mary, recording 31 saves and a .689 save percentage.
The senior made five saves in Saturday's victory at UMBC, including a first-half penalty-kick stop. He owns a 3-3-1 record and recorded his first shutout in the Green and Gold against College of Charleston on Sept. 5.
THE MONARCHS. No. 13 Old Dominion enters Tuesday at 7-1 on the season after suffering its first setback of the year, 2-1, against No. 4 South Carolina on Friday.
The Monarchs have produced 28 goals through eight matches while allowing nine. ODU is averaging 15.25 shots per match and has put 68 of its 122 attempts on goal.
Lewis Rourke leads a balanced ODU attack with six goals, three assists and 15 points. Jason Purks has added four goals and three assists for 11 points, while David Chapman has three goals and two assists. Micah Wayland has also scored three times.
In total, 12 Monarchs have found the back of the net this season.
TRIBE VS. MONARCHS. Old Dominion holds a 27-24-9 advantage in the all-time series against William & Mary.
The Monarchs earned a 3-1 victory in Williamsburg last season. W&M's most recent victory in the series came on Sept. 7, 2013, when the Tribe earned a 4-0 road win in Norfolk.
The teams most recently played to a draw on Sept. 13, 2022, battling to a scoreless tie in Norfolk.
FACING A RANKED FOE. Tuesday marks William & Mary's first matchup against a nationally ranked opponent this season.
The Tribe's most recent victory over a ranked opponent came on Oct. 11, 2022, when W&M knocked off No. 10 Wake Forest, 2-1, in Williamsburg.
W&M's last result against a ranked opponent was a 0-0 draw at No. 11 North Carolina on Oct. 17, 2023, while its most recent road victory over a ranked foe came at No. 21 James Madison, 3-2, on Nov. 2, 2019.
ROAD SWING CONCLUDES. Tuesday will be William & Mary's fifth road match in its last six games.
The Tribe is 1-2-1 away from home this season after Saturday's victory at UMBC. W&M's current road stretch has included trips to George Mason, Elon, UNCW and UMBC before concluding Tuesday in Norfolk.
