ANNAPOLIS, Md.— William & Mary men's golf standout Preston Burton claimed runner-up accolades at the Goat hosted by Navy, as he tied for medalist honors but was edged in a playoff to lead the Tribe to a third-place finish at the 14-team tournament on Sunday.
 
Burton entered the final round tied for fourth but ascended the leaderboard with a 2-under 69 during the final day to finish with a 2-under 211 (69-73-69). The Charlottesville, Va., native carded three birdies on the closing back nine to finish 54 holes atop the leaderboard with Connecticut's Kai Jun Huang, who won the individual title on the third playoff hole, and Georgetown's Carson Erick.
 
In addition to his impressive finish on Sunday, Burton also recorded five birdies during his 2-under 69 opening round on Saturday.
 
George Washington earned the team title with a four-over 856, while Georgetown (7-over, 859), W&M (11-over, 863) and Saint Joseph's (11-over, 863) rounded out the top three. The two-day, 54-hole event was contested at the par-71 United State Naval Academy Golf Club in Annapolis, Md.
 
The impressive performance marked the second consecutive week in which W&M has posted a top-three performance, as it opened the 2026-27 campaign by tying for third at the Bryan National Collegiate last weekend.
 
In addition to Burton's outstanding showing, Eli Felty nearly posted a top-10 finish and tied for 12th with a 3-over 216 (72-71-73) while Whitty Richardson tied for 18th with a 5-over 218 (75-69-74). Richardson tallied six birdies during his second-round 2-under 69.
 
Talon Dingledine also finished among the top 20 with a 6-over 219 (74-68-77), as his 3-under 68 in the second round was W&M's best score of weekend and tied for the second-best round among all competitors.
 
Grady Williams posted a 13-over 226 (74-74-78) to tie for 50th.
 
The Tribe will return to action when it competes at the WVU Nemacolin College Invitational on Oct. 5-6.
