GREENSBORO, N.C.— The William & Mary men's golf team opened its season with a third-place finish at the Bryan National Collegiate hosted by UNCG on Sunday.
The host Spartans claimed the title at the 13-team tournament with a 26-under 838, while Radford (7-under, 857), W&M (4-under, 860) and Georgetown (4-under, 860) rounded out the top three. The two-day, 54-hole event was contested at the Bryan Park Champions Course in Greensboro.
The impressive performance marked the second consecutive season in which W&M placed third at the season-opening tournament.
Freshman
Whitty Richardson was outstanding in his collegiate debut and tied for seventh with a 3-under 213 (69-71-73). The Atlanta, Ga., native carded four birdies during each of his first two rounds.
Senior
Preston Burton (74-70-72) and junior
Grady Williams (72-69-75) tied for 16th, as both Tribe standouts finished at even-par 216. Williams' 3-under 69 in the second round matched Richardson's first round score for W&M's low marks of the tournament.
Senior
Luke Walmet competed as an individual and tied for 25th with a 1-over 217 (72-73-72), while sophomores
Talon Dingledine (+4) and
Eli Felty (+7) tied for 39th and 55th, respectively.
W&M's 282 in the second round tied for the 10th-lowest score in program history (to par score, -6).
The Tribe will return to action when it competes at The Goat hosted by Navy next weekend.
