CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — William & Mary cross country continued its strong start to the season Friday morning, highlighted by a runner-up team finish from the men at the Virginia Invitational at Panorama Farms.
The Tribe men scored 73 points in the 6K to finish second among six teams, trailing only North Carolina's 21 points. W&M finished seven points ahead of host Virginia, which placed third with 80.
Hayes Trapp continued his impressive start to the season, leading the Green and Gold for the second consecutive meet. The reigning CAA Men's Runner of the Week placed sixth overall with a personal-best time of 17:55.2.
Alex Jordan gave W&M a second runner inside the top 10, crossing the line ninth in 18:02.9. Eli Phillips followed in 18th, posting a personal-best time of 18:19.9.
Tristan Thurneysen and Nolan Yeagle finished back-to-back to round out the Tribe's top five. Thurneysen placed 21st in 18:28.4, while Yeagle finished 22nd with a personal-best time of 18:28.6. Caleb Wilcox followed in 27th at 18:37.4.
Eric Fagan added another personal best for the Tribe, finishing 33rd in 18:48.5, while Colby Twyman crossed the line 36th with a personal-best time of 18:52.3.
On the women's side, W&M placed fourth among six teams with 127 points. North Carolina captured the team title with 27 points, edging Virginia by one.
Molly Weithman once again led the Tribe, recording a personal best in the 5K with a time of 17:20.9. Weithman finished 13th overall and was the first W&M runner across the line for the second consecutive meet.
Abby Lane was the Tribe's second finisher, placing 32nd in 18:09.6. Caroline Sapperstein and Veronica Znajda followed closely behind, finishing 36th and 37th in 18:24.7 and 18:25.1, respectively.
Meghan Sullivan rounded out W&M's top five with a 46th-place finish in 18:54.2. Allison McDonald added a personal-best performance, crossing the line 50th in 19:00.1.
The Tribe will have three weeks away from competition before returning to action Friday, Oct. 2, at the Firetower Project Run in Boone, N.C.
