William & Mary completed one of the most incredible comebacks in school history on Friday night, scoring 13 straight points in the final 53 seconds to post a 35-32 road victory against No. 7 Villanova.
 
It was a memorable Patriot League debut, to say the least. The Tribe scored its first win over a top-10 foe since 2022. What's more, it pulled off the feat in front of a national ESPN+ audience, leading to almost immediate reaction from media members throughout the country.
 
Within minutes of the final whistle, ESPN's SportsCenter X account was buzzing with praise for William & Mary's epic comeback. Through Sunday, it's post recapping the comeback grew to more than 4.5 views. It is the second-most viewed post on the popular SportsCenter channel in all of August.

ESPN featured highlights of the comeback victory on its flagship SportsCenter program, which aired on its main network as well as its assortment of other channels, including the ACC Network, SEC Network and ESPNU.
 
Game coverage from the New York Times, CNN and Yahoo captured the wild result. The NYT's headline said it all: "'Absolute Thriller': William & Mary opens FCS season with 13-point rally in final minute."
 
According to ESPN's win probability metric, the Tribe had a 0.2% chance of winning when it was down 32-22 with 2:11 remaining.
 
That score held into the final minute before William & Mary flipped the script. Max Lipinski drilled a 40-yard field goal with 53 seconds left, and then the Tribe recovered an onside kick that ricocheted off the hands of a Villanova player before getting scooped up by W&M at the Wildcats 39.
 
With 22 seconds remaining, W&M quarterback Winston Watkins completed a 37-yard touchdown pass to Kai Austin to knot it up at 32 apiece.
 
The Tribe defense set up the win with its fourth takeaway. Freshman defensive back Cade Ellis intercepted Pat McQuaide's third-down pass with five seconds remaining, and Lipinski made a 45-yard field goal as time expired to finish off the victory.

Afterward, national media took to social media to acknowledge the Tribe's epic accomplishment.
 
ESPN and Yahoo Sports gave the Tribe love on their X channels, as did national scribes like ESPN's Pete Thamel, The Athletic's Chris Vannini and Sports Illustrated's Pat Forde.
 
The win gives William & Mary considerable helium heading into its home opener against Delaware State at 6 p.m. on Saturday night at Zable Stadium. It will be a time for celebration and recognition, as the Tribe will honor legendary former coach Lou Holtz during an on-field presentation. W&M players will wear special helmet decals honoring the College Football Hall of Famer.
