ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The William & Mary soccer team played Navy to a 1-1 draw at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis on Monday to open the Tribe's season.
Â
Navy scored first in the 35th minute, while William & Mary equalized in the second half via
Aidan Morrison. Both teams registered three shots on goal, with the Green and Gold taking a total of seven shots and the Midshipmen firing nine.
Â
The match saw a total of 24 fouls, with W&M committing 11 and Navy 13.
Â
In the first half, the Tribe applied early pressure with a corner kick at the third minute and held the possession for most of the first 10 minutes. However, Navy managed to break the deadlock with a goal from just inside the box in the 35
th minute.
Â
Despite a saved shot by Morrison shortly after and a series of corner kicks, W&M ended the half trailing 1-0.
Â
The scoreless first half didn't deter
Chris Norris' squad however, playing with an intensity to begin the second half.
Â
Midway through, at the 70th minute, Morrison found the back of the net with a crucial goal, leveling the score at 1-1 after Navy had initially led. The play began with a lofted in ball from
Diogo Branco to
Gabe Ruitenberg in the box. He then chested it to Morrison who finished the play for the goal.
Â
The two sides pushed from there to earn a win but the match concluded in a 1-1 tie, showcasing strong defensive plays, including saves by
Karan Sobti, that maintained the equilibrium.
Â
Aside from the tally Morrison led the team's offensive efforts with two shots on goal, while Ruitenberg also recorded three shots, with one on target, on top of his assist.
Â
The opener was the first career start in goal for Sobti, who was crucial in defense, recording two saves while facing nine shots and allowing only one goal.
Â
The next challenge for W&M is a trip to Buies Creek, N.C., where they will face Campbell on August 29. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. on FloCollege as the Tribe takes to the road.
