Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer's Offensive Onslaught Stymied by Loyola (Md.), 1-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— The William & Mary women's soccer team turned the offensive pressure up to "10" on Thursday night at Martin Family Stadium, but unfortunately came up with nothing to show for it, falling to Loyola (Md.), 1-0.

The opening minutes of the game were back and forth with both teams trying to establish themselves.

Loyola (2-0-1, 0-0 Patriot) posted the first shot on goal of the contest in the 7th minute, but were shut down by Tribe keeper Gwen Doughty, who scooped up the shot attempt.

W&M (0-2-1, 0-0 CAA) earned their first shot on target in the 19th minute via Ivey Crain which was also handled cleanly by the opposing netminder.

The teams continued to battle in the midfield with chances coming here and there, but most did not find the target. When the halftime whistle arrived, the game was still 0-0 with shots favoring Loyola 7-4.

Doughty posted a trio of saves in the opening 45 minutes, with the Tribe registering one more shot on goal in the 31st minute from Ellie Leffler.

The Green and Gold clearly made it a point to be more active on the attack during halftime and wasted no time getting to it. Crain had two more shots saved and Lizzie Rubino just missed the target within the first five minutes of the second half.

The Greyhounds struggled to sustain a constant attack but were able to test Doughty in the 57th minute. The Tribe freshman was up to the task however, making the save to keep things scoreless.

Paige Seitz and Kenley Campbell each took tries at goal in the 65th and 77th minute respectively but Seitz shot was saved, and Campbell's missed high.

The 0-0 deadlock was broken in the 80th minute by Loyola taking advantage of a corner and finding the back of the net amidst a scrum just outside the 6-yard box.

W&M especially dominated possession over the final 10 minutes trying to find an equalizer and seemed on the verge of breaking through with under a minute to play.

Crain was taken down 25 yards out and the Tribe awarded a free kick. Sheridan Brummett delivered a quality strike off the set piece, but the Greyhound keeper made a nice leaping effort to knock it out of play for a W&M corner.

The Tribe rushed to beat the clock and was able to produce two more quality looks at goal.

Seitz forced the keeper to again make a leaping effort which led to a rebound chance on the other side of the box for Leffler. Her shot as time expired found the same fate as the previous two, and Loyola escaped Williamsburg with a 1-0 win.

W&M outshot the Greyhounds 11-3 in the second half and 15-10 on the evening. The 11 tries at goal in the final 45 minutes were more than W&M had generated in each of its previous two games. Crain was the most frequent taker of those attempts, trying four shots on the night with three being on frame.

Doughty finished the match with a season-high five saves.

The Tribe returns to action on Sunday at Martin Family Stadium as it plays host to App State. Kickoff is set for noon with the game broadcast on FloCollege.
