Tribe’s Season Ends Against Elon, 7-4

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — William & Mary baseball saw its season come to an end on day two of the CAA Tournament, falling to Elon 7-4 at the Ballpark at Patriots Point on Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Elon (24-31) opened the scoring with a bases-loaded RBI walk in the top of the first. W&M starter Zach Boyd settled in from there, limiting the damage to one run and going 3 ⅔ innings with four strikeouts.

The Tribe (21-35) evened the contest in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly from first baseman Anthony Greco, taking advantage of two hit batters.

Boyd would exit in the fourth and was replaced by RHP Carter Lovasz, who pitched masterfully over 4 ⅓ innings. The senior racked up eight strikeouts and held the Phoenix to just one hit. Lovasz retired eight straight batters between the fourth and seventh innings.

W&M was limited offensively to just six hits. The Green & Gold was hurt by nine runners left on base as it stranded a pair in the sixth inning and left the bags full in the eighth.

Elon broke the game open in the ninth, scoring six runs to take a 7-1 lead.

The Tribe did stage a rally in the last of the ninth. After loading the bags, Henry Jackson scored on a balk by Elon pitcher Ryan Sprock. Third baseman Jamie Laskofski then singled through the right side for an RBI, making it a 7-3 game.

A fielder's choice allowed another run to score as Lucas Carmichael touched home plate. W&M got the winning run to the plate in the form of Charlie Iriotakis, but a groundout to the pitcher thwarted the comeback effort.

Sprock earned the win for the Phoenix, while Lovasz took a tough-luck loss for the Tribe.

STAT NUGGETS
  • Laskofski had a three-hit day, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a double.
  • Carmichael went 2-for-5 with a double.
  • Lovasz' eight strikeouts marked a career-high.
  • Catcher Jerry Barnes III was 2-for-3 with a double.
