Women's Tennis Looks to Continue CAA Title Run

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Three-time defending champion William & Mary travels to Elon to take part in the 2025 CAA Women's Tennis Championship at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, April 25-27. The Tribe, which is the No. 2 seed for the fifth time and second-straight season, has won 29 of the 39 all-time league titles.

The Tribe opens play in the semifinals on Saturday against No. 3 Delaware, who topped No. 6 Campbell, 4-0, on Friday, at 10 a.m. The winner advances to the CAA Championship against either No. 1 Elon or No. 4 Charleston on Sunday at 10 a.m.

For the first time in 2025, only the top six men's and women's teams, as chosen by a panel of conference administrators, will compete for the titles. The Tournaments will also be played over the same three days in Elon. Admission is free to all matches at the CAA Tennis Championships.

Tribe News and Notes
- The Tribe enters the CAA Championship as the No. 2 seed for the fifth time. W&M has been the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in 23 of the last 27 tournaments. W&M won the league title from the No. 2 position at Elon in both 2022 and 2024.
- The Tribe wrapped up the regular season at 13-5, including a 4-1 CAA mark. Highlighting the Green and Gold's regular-season run was a seven-match win streak during the month of March.
- Over the last four seasons, W&M is 59-26 (.694) under head coach Jessica Giuggioli. The Tribe is an impressive 29-2 against CAA competition during Giuggioli's tenure.
- During the regular season, W&M posted CAA wins over No. 4 seed Charleston (5-2), No. 5 UNCW (6-1), Drexel (7-0), and Towson (7-0). The Tribe's lone CAA loss came in its regular-season finale at top-seed Elon by a narrow 4-3 scoreline.
- The Tribe's match with Delaware is a rematch of the 2024 CAA Championship match. W&M downed the Blue Hens last season 4-0 to capture its third league crown in a row.
- Two-time reigning CAA Player of the Year Hedda Gurholt ranks 14th in W&M's storied history in career singles wins (91) and singles winning % (71.1). This season, she holds a 19-13 overall mark, including a 13-5 ledger at No. 1. Gurholt enters the CAA Championship on a three-match win streak.
- Twice in 2025, Gurholt was named the CAA Player of the Week on Feb. 4 and March 18. The honors brought Gurholt's career total to eight singles player of the week honors.
- Gurholt is 43-12 (.782) in her career at the No. 1 singles position. For her career, she is 32-4 over her four seasons against CAA opponents (.889).
- The Tribe has won the doubles point in 13 of its 18 matches this season. As a team, W&M is 33-16 (.673) in dual-match doubles play, including a 13-2 record (.867) in CAA play.
- In dual-match play, W&M has a 70.1 % singles winning % behind a 75-32 record. The Tribe has been even better in CAA play at 23-6 (79.3%) in singles competition.
- Sophomore Francesca Davis and senior Alessandra Anghel lead the Tribe with 22 and 21 singles victories on the season, respectively.  Anghel, who was named the CAA Player of the Week on Feb. 18, owns a 13-5 mark at the No. 2 position, including a 4-1 ledger in CAA play. Davis went 12-6 in dual-match play at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions.
- Senior Ine Stange and freshman Mira Kernagis each own 18 singles wins on the season. Stange posted a 12-5 dual-match record at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, while Kernagis tallied 10 dual-match wins, including an 8-3 mark on line six.
- Gurholt and Stange hold down the top doubles position for the Tribe. The duo owns nine wins at No. 1, including an impressive 4-1 mark in CAA play.  
- Anghel and Davis have been impressive at No. 2 doubles. The tandem owns a 15-3 overall record, including a 13-2 ledger at No. 2. The pair was named the CAA Doubles Team of the Week on Feb. 4.  
- For the second-straight season, Davis leads the Tribe in doubles victories with a 23-5 mark. Over her two seasons she is 47-11 in pairs play, including a 28-6 dual-match record. Her career doubles winning % of 81.0 ranks as the best in W&M history.
- Senior Emma Fernald and Kernagis earned CAA Doubles Team of the Week honors on March 25 from the No. 3 spot. The duo posted clinching wins in Tribe victories over Charleston and Fordham.
 
Dominating the CAA
W&M has a long history of dominating CAA competition, and more importantly the CAA Championship. The Tribe has won 29 of the CAA's 39 all-time women's tennis championships and finished as the runner-up on seven other occasions.
 
Since the league adopted its current, head-to-head team format for the CAA Championship in 1995, the Green and Gold is 72-9 (.889) at the event. Overall since the first season of CAA tennis, the Tribe is 175-24 (.879) all-time versus league opponents. In matches with current CAA teams, W&M owns a 72-6 (.923) all-time record.
