WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary men's tennis wrapped up the regular season with a 4-1 win over Richmond at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon.
The Tribe captured an early doubles point thanks to a win on court 3 and the clincher at No. 2 provided by freshman
Gur Trakhtenberg and senior
Sean Joseph. W&M (6-13) proceeded to tally three singles wins by sophomores
Oliver Hague and
Nikita Bortnichek as well as the capper from Trakhtenberg to secure the victory.
How It Happened
- Hague and junior
Albert Hansen defeated the Spiders' Mark Taranov and Grant Cohen, 6-2, on court 3 to give the Tribe the doubles advantage. The Green and Gold pair recorded its fourth win in doubles.
- At the No. 2 spot, Trakhtenberg and Joseph combined for a 6-1 win over Sam Rathmanner and Paxton Pritchard to secure the 1-0 W&M lead. The team moved to an impressive 9-3 record.
- After a Richmond (9-8) singles win on court 6 tied the match, Hague answered with a 6-2, 6-2 straight-sets victory over Paxton Pritchard at No. 2. Hague won his 14th match of the season and restored the Tribe lead at 2-1.
- Bortnichek added to the lead with his 7-5, 6-2 win over Otto Sewell at the No. 3 spot. He tallied his 11th singles win of the season and sixth in dual match competition.
- Finally, Trakhtenberg clinched the Tribe victory with a comeback win against Richmond's Davis Wiley at No. 1. After dropping the opening set, 6-2, the Tribe freshman answered with a 6-2 win in the second, before closing out the W&M triumph with a 6-4 third-set win. Trakhtenberg improved to 17-12 for the season with six wins at No. 1.
- Hansen jumped out to a set lead at No. 4 over Sam Rathmanner, winning the first, 6-4. The match was abandoned in the second set with the team result decided.
- Joseph forced a third set on court 5, claiming the second, 7-5, from Cole Brashear. The contest was abandoned before one game could be completed in the third set after the Tribe clinched the win.
Six teams qualify for the CAA Championship, which is slated for April 25-27 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C. The Tribe will await its fate in qualifying for the CAA Championship when the league makes the announcement early next week.
