BUIES CREEK, N.C.—After hanging around for much of the first half the William & Mary women's basketball team couldn't keep pace with Campbell on Saturday afternoon in Buies Creek, dropping the regular season finale 73-55.
The Tribe will be the No. 9 seed in the Credit Union 1 CAA Women's Basketball Championship taking on No. 8 Hofstra at noon on Thursday in the second round. The entire tournament will be played at CareFirst Arena in Washington, D.C.
The Green and Gold finishes the regular season 11-18 and 8-10 in CAA action.
W&M put a trio of players in double figures on Saturday, led by
Bella Nascimento with 18.
Kayla Rolph added 12 while
Natalie Fox scored 10.
All three Tribe players, Fox, Nascimento and Rolph made their first shots of the game to get W&M off to a 3-for-3 start from the floor and off to a 6-5 lead two minutes in.
The Fighting Camels (19-11, 12-6 CAA) responded to take the lead 13-10 with 4:09 to go in the quarter. The Tribe answered with a run of their own as Nascimento scored four straight to make it 16-13 W&M.
Campbell would lead at quarter's end however, 20-16.
The Camels kept up their offensive pace in the second quarter, getting out to a 40-26 lead with 3:06 remaining in the half. From there the Tribe went on a 9-3 spurt to close out the opening 20 minutes.
Two free throws each from Fox and
Monet Dance in the last minute made it a 43-35 game at the half.
Nascimento would cash a 3-pointer roughly three minutes into the third, cutting to 47-43, but that was as close as W&M would get in the second half.
Campbell would go on to a 10-2 run to close out the quarter and then outscore the Tribe 16-10 in the fourth to earn a 73-55 home win.
Cassidy Geddes would score six of her eight points on the afternoon in the fourth quarter for W&M.
The Tribe shot 14-for-16 from the charity stripe while posting 44.2% and 3-for-10 from behind the arc. Campbell shot 45.5% from the floor while knocking down 10 triples on the afternoon.
