WILLIAMSBURG, Va.—The William & Mary women's basketball team honored its graduating class of six players for 'Senior Day' on Sunday, but had the festivities spoiled by long scoreless stretches, losing 54-34 to Hofstra in Kaplan Arena.
Alexa Mikeska,
Kayla Rolph,
Kayla Beckwith,
Bella Nascimento,
Rebekah Frisby-Smith and
Anahi-Lee Cauley were the six players honored pregame.
W&M (11-16, 8-8 CAA) will have two more regular season games to battle before positioning in the conference standings before the CAA Tournament next week in Washington, D.C.
The game started out as a defensive battle between the two sides, with the first bucket not coming until the 7:10 mark thanks to a Cauley jumper. The senior would add another bucket two minutes later to tie the game at 4-4.
The defenses continued to flex their muscle for the rest of the quarter with W&M leading 8-7 after one.
The Pride offense woke up in the second, getting out to a four-point lead in the first two minutes. When the halftime buzzer had sounded Hofstra (12-15, 7-9 CAA) had outscored the Tribe 19-8 in the second and led 26-16 at the half.
W&M's only offensive burst of the day came out of the halftime break, scoring the first eight points of the third thanks to 3-pointers from Frisby-Smith and Cauley and an additional Cauley layup, making it a 28-24 game.
That was as close as the hosts would get however, being held scoreless over the final seven minutes of the third to fall behind 41-24. The Pride would outscore again in the fourth, 13-10, to earn a 54-34 road win.
Cauley's nine points led the way for the Tribe with
Cassidy Geddes adding eight. Rolph's eight boards were a team high.
The Tribe shot 23.7% from the floor while Hofstra posted a mark of 40.4%.
