Late Rally Falls Short as Baseball Swept by ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Despite erasing a six-run deficit, the William & Mary baseball team was unable to salvage game two of the doubleheader as they were swept by East Carolina on Saturday, dropping the first game 19-6 and losing in the nightcap 9-8.

GAME ONE
ECU (12-8) flexed its muscles with 13 runs in the first inning, taking a 17-0 lead after two frames.

William & Mary (5-15) fought back, getting on the board with five runs in the top of the third. Right fielder Charlie Iriotakis started the scoring when he came home on a wild pitch.

Center fielder Ben Parker then drove in the Tribe's second run with an RBI double, the first of five consecutive base hits for the Tribe. Left fielder Lucas Carmichael hit an RBI single to right field, followed by a two-run single off the bat of first baseman Anthony Greco.

W&M had seven hits in the inning.

RHP Zach Boyd was able to provide length out of the bullpen, pitching four innings to close the game. The freshman struck out three and let up two runs.

In the fifth, second baseman Derek Holmes added an RBI single, part of a 2-for-3 day. The Tribe nearly evened up ECU in hits 13-11, but four home runs and nine free bases drawn for the Pirates proved to be the difference.

Carmichael went 2-for-4 with two runs. Iriotakis was 2-for-3.

Ian White, Jr. recorded the win in relief for ECU, delivering 1.1 scoreless innings. W&M starter Reed Interdonato was the losing pitcher.

GAME TWO
In a similar refrain to game one, ECU delivered an early barrage with six runs in the first inning of the nightcap.

The Tribe struck back immediately, answering with a six-run second inning. The scoring was started by Parker's two-run single. In the ensuing at-bat, Carmichael roped a double down the right field line that plated Parker to cut the lead to 6-3.

W&M narrowed the deficit to one when Rush connected on a base hit to left that drove in two runs. An Iriotakis RBI single evened the score at 6-6, all the damage being done with two outs.

RHP Owen Pierce limited the Pirates to just two earned runs over 5.2 innings after entering the contest with one out in the first.

After the Pirates went back ahead with two runs, the visitors chipped away at the deficit with an RBI single by Carmichael in the top of the third.

Carmichael was 3-for-5 with two RBI in the losing effort.

The contest was a pitcher's duel from there. Pierce handed the ball to RHP Nick Lottchea in the seventh, who registered six outs without allowing a run. Lottchea worked out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the eighth after inducing a pair of fielder's choice groundouts and a strikeout.

The Tribe made it a 9-8 ballgame after Parker again came up with an RBI double that plated Jamie Laskofski. W&M had a chance to tie the game after drawing consecutive walks to begin the ninth, but ECU pitcher Colby Wallace got three straight outs to end the rally.

Wallace got the save while Ethan Young was the winner for East Carolina. Pierce took a tough-luck loss for the Tribe.
