NEWARK, Del.— William & Mary women's basketball was unable to overcome the hot shooting of Delaware on Sunday afternoon, falling 82-59 in Newark.
Bella Nascimento kept up her strong performance during CAA play, posting 22 to lead the Tribe. She has now scored over 20 in four consecutive games for the Green and Gold.
After an 8-2 start in favor of the Blue Hens, Nascimento scored on back-to-back drives to pull W&M (10-13, 7-5 CAA) within two at the 5:58 mark. The Tribe would make the deficit two again minutes later, with
Monet Dance hitting a triple.
When the first quarter ended UD (9-14, 6-7 CAA) held a 23-14 lead.
The Hens lead would grow to 13 in the first three minutes of the second. Nascimento would hit two more shots with a
Kayla Rolph layup in between to cut it to 29-22, forcing a Delaware timeout.
Delaware's lead would return to 12, 37-25 when the half came to an end.
Coming out of the halftime break both teams traded buckets. The Hens would go up by 16 with 7:38 on the clock before the Tribe would battle to cut that deficit in half as
Marley Long scored four points in the span of a minute. Her second bucket of the sequence made it 49-41 at the 4:35 mark.
Delaware once again responded with a run before four straight
Cassidy Geddes free throws ended the third 59-47 in favor the hosts.
The Tribe would once again cut it to eight, with Nascimento hitting two jumpers at the start of the fourth, but that is as close as W&M would get.
Delaware used another slew of made shots to cruise to an 83-59 home win.
Geddes joined Nascimento in double figures with 10 thanks to 8-for-8 from the line. She also led the team with five rebounds.
The Blue Hens shot 55% from the floor and 8-of-16 from deep while the Tribe was 42.1% from the field with just one make from deep.
