ELON, N.C. — William & Mary men's soccer fell to Elon 1-0 on Saturday evening at Rudd Field, with the Tribe unable to capitalize on their five shots on goal. This match marked the final game of the season for the Tribe.
The match between began with both teams vying for control.
The Green and Gold had several attempts to break through, notably with a shot by
Gabe Ruitenberg at the 23rd minute mark, which went wide. The visiting team continued to press with
Diogo Branco's attempt at the 31st minute, but it was saved by Elon's goalkeeper.
Despite multiple corner kicks and shots, neither team managed to score, ending the first half in a 0-0 tie.
The second half saw W&M create several opportunities, most notably with Ruitenberg's attempts at goal in the 57th and 70th minutes, but both were saved.
The pivotal moment came in the 72nd minute when Elon was able to end the scoreless stalemate and find the back of the net. From there the Phoenix hung on to grab a 1-0 victory in the regular season finale.
Ruitenberg led the Green and Gold in offensive attempts, taking four shots with three on target.
Karan Sobti, in goal, recorded two saves while facing 12 shot attempts. Branco added to the attack with two shots, including one on goal.
Sam Delgado contributed with a single shot, which tested the opposing goalkeeper.
