Delaware Sneaks Past Women's Soccer 1-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— The William & Mary women's soccer team owned the majority of the chances on Sunday afternoon against Delaware but ended up dropping a 1-0 decision to the Blue Hens at Martin Family Stadium.

The Tribe maintained possession for most of the first half, as was evident in their number of scoring opportunities.

Ivey Crain fired three shots for the Tribe in the first 11 minutes. Two of the three were on target but saved by the Delaware keeper.

Minutes later Mia Suchora had a pair of shots from just outside the 6-yard box. The first was saved by the goalie, rebounding back to Suchora who's second chance was blocked by a Blue Hen before reaching the target.

Delaware used the momentum from the defensive stand to power a counterattack that ended with a goal in the 17th minute, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Molly Widderich and Crain attempted to respond for the Tribe, but each had shot attempts saved.

The best chance of the half for W&M (7-5-0, 2-2-0 CAA) may have come in the 35th minute off a corner kick.

Elaina Longjohn tried a shot directly off the corner that was blocked before the ball bounced to Marisa McClure. McClure's rebound attempt was partially blocked, hit the crossbar, and went out of bounds.

Despite holding a demanding 10-1 lead in the shot category, the Tribe went to the halftime break trailing the Blue Hens 1-0. Five of the Tribe's shots in the half were on goal, but all were saved.

Delaware (5-4-2, 3-0-0 CAA), now winners of four straight, did a better job of maintaining possession and limiting W&M chances in the second half.

Shots finished even at 3-3 in the last 45 minutes with the Tribe able to put a pair of shots on goal.

Widderich had a chance that was saved in the 62nd minute from inside the box, while Gabriella Kurtas took a shot from 25 yards away in the 86th minute but was unable to beat the Blue Hen keeper who finished the day with seven saves.

The Tribe led the final shot total 13-4, but ultimately fell 1-0.
