OT Heartbreaker Spoils Field Hockey's CAA Opener

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – For the second time in as many games, William & Mary field hockey suffered an overtime setback, falling in its CAA opener to Towson, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Busch Field.

Trailing 1-0, W&M pulled even just before the half on senior Sara Bartzen's first goal of the season and second of her career.

Unfortunately, Towson (4-4, 1-1 CAA) found the winner with less than two minutes remaining in the extra session. Madisyn Howard fed the ball into the right side of the circle to Anouk Westerink, and the Towson forward fired a hard shot into the leftside boards from angle for the game-winner in the 69th minute.

The Tribe tallied a season-high 17 shots with seven on goal, while the Tigers also had 17 shots (10 on goal). W&M (0-9, 0-1 CAA) generated nine penalty corners compared to Towson's four.

The visitors scored 10 minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead. Sarah Hatfield carried the ball from midfield into the top of the circle, before scoring into the leftside boards.

The Tribe generated a pair of penalty corners in the closing seconds of the opening half and scored with no time on the clock. On the play, senior Pyper Friedman made a nifty pass between her legs to classmate Kellen Richbourg. The senior midfielder's shot from the right side turned into a pass as Bartzen got a stick to it, redirecting it into the left side of the cage to knot the game at one. It was Richbourg's second career assist.

Bartzen narrowly missed giving the Tribe the lead with just two minutes remaining in regulation. Graduate student Maddie McGaughey carried to the right side of the circle and sent a pass to the back post where Bartzen directed it toward goal. The shot bounced off the left post and out of bounds.

W&M had two great chances in overtime, but couldn't find the winner. In the 64th minute, Friedman carried into the right side of the circle before centering a pass. Junior Olivia Stocks got a stick to it, but Towson goalkeeper Tessa Scheenstra made the top. Four minutes later, it was again Scheenstra with the stop, kicking away freshman Darcy Kopsinis's break away chance.

The Tribe added to its CAA-leading total of defensive saves with two on the afternoon. Junior Emme Schwartz notched her league-leading third of the season, while sophomore Josie Mae Gruendel tallied the first of her career. Graduate student goalkeeper Maddie George finished with six saves in cage.
