WASHINGTON, D.C. – William & Mary field hockey suffered a 2-0 setback at American on Friday afternoon.
The Eagles (3-4) scored in the first and fourth quarters to pull out the victory. Graduate student goalkeeper
Maddie George recorded her fourth double-digit save performance of the season, totaling 12 on the afternoon.
American broke through with the opener in the fifth minute. Rebecca Bonness fed a bounding pass across the crease where Emily Horace was there to push it into the left side boards from in close. It was Horace's first goal of the year.
W&M had four shots in the 13th minute but could not find the equalizer. The first chance came off the stick of junior
Erin Griffin, but it was stopped by American goalkeeper Bryn Underwood. The shot did lead to the first of three consecutive penalty corner opportunities for the Green and Gold.
Off the first two corners, Tribe shots were blocked by the Eagles defense, before Underwood turned away a strike from the left side of the circle by senior
Kellen Richbourg.
In total, George made nine first-half saves, including five in the second quarter to keep the deficit at one.
The home team finally found its second goal in the 48th minute. Jordan Reicher intercepted a Tribe pass and cut into the circle, before scoring into the right side boards to provide the final margin.
Richbourg led the Tribe with two of the team's four shots. Griffin notched a shot on goal.
