TRIBE NOTES
Last Time Out
The Tribe battled to a 1-0 victory on the road last Thursday at NC State behind a 56
th minute goal from
Leah Iglesias and four timely stops from
Jazzy Lorenz. Iglesias took a cross from
Molly Widderich in the middle box, settling the bouncing ball to fire a shot that deflected off the keeper, the left post and eventually into the net. The play was started by
Nora Green-Orset playing a precise ball forward to Widderich, earning a secondary assist for the effort. The Wolfpack outshot the Tribe 13-6 on the evening but were unable to solve Lorenz.
Jazz Hands
Thanks to her third clean sheet in the last four matches,
Jazzy Lorenz earned CAA Rookie of the Week Honors on Monday. Lorenz, who redshirted last year with W&M, has started the last seven games for the Tribe in her first collegiate season. The Lone Tree, Colo. native has posted a 0.77 goals against average with 16 total saves and a 5-2-0 record through non-conference play.
Been a Minute
The win over NC State was W&M's first win over an ACC opponent since 2016, when they beat Boston College in a neutral site matchup. The last time the Tribe beat an ACC team in a true road contest was 2015, also beating NC State in Raleigh. The Tribe has had a strong history of success against the Wolfpack, posting a 6-0-1 record against them dating back to 1997.
Shooters Shoot
The Tribe has done a great job of maximizing their chances while limiting shots for the opposition through non-conference play. W&M has outshot their opponents 117-65 through the first eight games of the season. The Tribe also leads their opposition handily in shots on goal 58-27. Thursday's game at NC State was the first time W&M was outshot this season.
Leah's Hot Start
Leah Iglesias, through just eight games, has matched her offensive production from all last year. The senior from Carle Place, N.Y. has posted three goals and three assists for nine total points, just as she did in 20 games in 2023. The second year transfer from Hofstra has earned a point in six of the last seven matches, including the game winning goal at NC State.
CAA Openers
The Tribe is unbeaten in their last four CAA openers, going 2-0-2. The last time W&M was beaten in a conference opener was by Charleston in 2018.
Scouting the Pirates and the Seahawks
Hampton enters conference play on a two-game win streak, picking up wins over DII programs Lincoln and Virginia State. The Pirates are 3-4-1 with their lone DI win over Delaware State. They went 0-12 in CAA play last year.
UNCW heads into conference play at 2-4-2 with wins over Charlotte and Coastal Carolina. The Seahawks will start CAA play with a home match against Campbell before coming to Williamsburg. UNCW finished 4-5-3 in the CAA last year.
History with the Pirates and Seahawks
With the Pirates just recently adding women's soccer, Thursday will only be the third meeting between the two programs. The Tribe has taken 7-0 and 4-0 wins over Hampton the last two seasons respectively.
The Tribe and the Seahawks will meet for the 34
th time on Sunday. Despite holding a commanding 25-7-1 lead over UNCW, W&M has struggled with the Seahawks as of late, with UNCW winning five of the last six meetings, including last year's game in Wilmington by a score of 2-0.
