Volleyball Concludes Opening Weekend at Quest for the Crown with Setback to Virginia

NORFOLK, Va. – The William & Mary volleyball team concluded its season-opening weekend with a 3-0 loss to Virginia (15-25, 20-25, 14-25) at the Quest for the Crown hosted by Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon.

Audrey Brcka led the Tribe (1-1) with five kills, while Maddie Meyers and Nicole Smith posted four put-aways apiece.

Cate Hatfield totaled a team-high eight digs to go with five assists, while Bella Easton recorded a team-leading eight assists.

Although W&M scored the contest's opening point on a kill by Malcolm, UVA (2-0) responded with a 12-2 run and maintained a double-digit advantage for much of the first set. Malcolm and Brcka both tallied three kills apiece in the set, while Hafield added five digs and Easton dished out four assists.

Much of the second frame was tightly contested, as the teams exchanged five ties early in the set. A kill by Easton knotted the score at 10-10, but the Cavaliers edged ahead with an 8-3 run. The Tribe narrowed the margin to just two, 19-17, following a Hatfield kill, but UVA pulled away down the stretch for the 25-20 win.

The Tribe jumped out to an early 4-2 advantage in the third set, but Virginia countered by scoring 14 of the next 15 points. W&M briefly cut the margin to single digits on three occasions but UVA closed out the set at the match.

Olivia Esposito and Sabrina Malcolm were selected to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the event following their impressive season-opening performances. Esposito totaled a team-high 7.0 blocks to go with nine kills, four digs and three assists, while Malcolm finished the weekend with 5.0 blocks and eight kills.

W&M will return to action when it hosts Old Dominion at Kaplan Arena for its home opener on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
