Baseball Routs Hofstra in Elimination Game, Falls to Delaware to Conclude 2024 Campaign

WILMINGTON, N.C. – In its first matchup of the day, No. 5 William & Mary baseball (32-25) knocked off No. 6 Hofstra (24-33) in dominant fashion, posting a 16-6 victory to advance in its second elimination game of the CAA Championship.

Taking the early win over the Pride, W&M matched its 2023 campaign with 32 wins for the most since 2019 and posted a multi-win postseason for the first time since the 2019 season. Head Coach Mike McRae secured his 90th victory at the helm of the program in his third year.

W&M found itself on each side of a ten-run ballgame, falling in its second contest of the day to conclude the 2024 season against No. 4 Delaware (31-25), 18-8.

14 of the Tribe's 24 runs scored over Friday's two games came across with two outs on the board, including four in the bottom of the eighth inning of game two. W&M fought down to the final pitch.

Game One vs. Hofstra
The Tribe exploded to tie the second-most runs scored in a tournament game in program history, scoring more only once, in a 20-19 victory over James Madison in 2013.

Five hit batters lifted the Tribe over its second offensive team record of the year, bringing the season tally to 117, passing the program-record 114 from 2023.

In another record-tying mark, Henry Jackson came across for five runs, scoring each of his times on base, to match the most runs scored in a single game for just the sixth time in recorded program history.

In a game of threes, freshman Anthony Greco posted his second three-hit game of the tournament, also adding a pair of runs and a pair of RBI. Joe Delossantos tallied three hits and three runs while Trey Christman belted a three-run home run.

Each of the teams scored three in the first inning as Hofstra got up to an early lead and the Tribe had an answer, stringing together three hits and a pair of walks. Jackson belted a leadoff single and Delossantos, Greco, and Christian Rush each reached in succession. Witt Scafidi notched an RBI on a fielder's choice.

Over the next eight innings, starter Owen Pierce, Travis Garnett and Reed Interdonato would combine to give up just three more runs, allowing the Pride to scatter one-run innings.

The Tribe, on the other hand, put up crooked numbers over multiple innings, putting up five runs in the fourth inning and six in the seventh.

Continuing in their strength of getting on base, the Tribe saw nine baserunners reach in the bottom of the fourth, five of them coming around to score.

Christman was walked twice in the frame, the first was to lead off the Tribe's initial offensive outburst. Jackson walked and Parker doubled him in; Delossantos was hit by a pitch and Greco singled in Parker; Delossantos scored on an error and Rush, Nate Goranson and Luca Trigiani drew walks before a wild pitch brought Rush around to score.

In the fifth, Jackson was hit by his first of two in the contest, which Greco followed with an RBI single to give W&M a five-run lead, 9-4.

Entering the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with one out and bases loaded, Interdonato got a swift two outs to strand three. He retired the side in order in the seventh inning to give way to the Tribe's six-run bottom half.

Again leading off a big inning with a walk, Jackson and Parker drew a pair on full counts. Scoring each of his outfielder counterparts, Delossantos ripped a double down the left line to lift the Tribe to a double-digit total, 11-5.

Rush and Goranson belted back-to-back singles before Christman launched his first hit of the day over the left-field wall for a 10-run lead.

Both teams would add one more run in the contest, the Pride getting one across on a sacrifice fly and the Tribe scratching across the final run of the contest on a wild pitch.

In just seven pitches, Interdonato called game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close on W&M's second-straight victory to avoid elimination. The righty picked up his second save on the year and the Tribe advanced to play a second time in the evening Friday.

Game Two vs. Delaware
Delossantos, a fifth-year senior and staple of the Tribe's offense, ended his career with a bang, banging out a three-run home run in his final collegiate at-bat. The outfielder's 32nd career home run was the 14th of his season, landing him in eighth place in both single-season and career homers.

Scoring his 69th run on the homer, Ben Parker jumped to fifth in single-season runs scored in program history.

The Tribe struggled early in the night cap as early offensive pressure from Delaware dug W&M into a 13-0 hole through the first pair of innings. Scoring in each of the first four frames, the Blue Hens collected a commanding 16-1 lead through four.

Gaining momentum in the middle innings, Alex Markus tossed a pair of scoreless innings out of the bullpen – the first of their kind for W&M in the contest – which the Tribe followed with three-straight run-scoring innings to close the game.

A seven-run last ditch effort ensued for the Green & Gold as the team once again took advantage of their ability to draw on free passes. Josiah Seguin singled as Christman, Jackson and Greco all drew walks. Delossantos drove in the first of the inning on a sacrifice fly and Rush notched an RBI as he wore a pitch.

Delossantos' final career homer added three in the eighth, following a run scoring on a Delaware wild pitch. Sophomore Corey Adams drove in the final run of the 2024 season, scoring Rush on a sacrifice fly for the deciding 18-8 final score.

Breaking four program records, the Tribe brought their season final tallies to 570 strikeouts, adding 95 to the previous single-season total, 10.13 K/9, 1.64 more than the previous best. A pair of records dropped at the plate, with 356 walks and 121 HBPs, the latter breaking in the Tribe's final day of competition in the season.
