WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary men's tennis avenged its CAA Quarterfinal loss from a season ago by upending the No. 4 seed Monmouth, 4-1, on Friday afternoon at the Mackesy Tennis Center.
The Hawks (15-6) won the previous two meetings between the teams. Along with the CAA Tourney win last season, Monmouth squeaked by the Tribe, 4-3, in a March meeting in New Jersey.
Leading 3-1, graduate student
Bill Duo won the final two points of his service game, cashing in his third match point and fending off a break point, to clinch the Tribe victory. He pulled out a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alex Martinez Sanz at No. 4 to send the Tribe into the CAA semifinals. Duo upped his mark to 12-6 on the year.
Unlike the regular-season meeting, W&M (13-9) captured the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead behind wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The Green and Gold jumped out to break leads early in all three matches. Graduate student
Satchel Benn and freshman
Oliver Hague won their 13th-straight contest at No. 2, topping Adam Hillerby and Gabriel Berner, 6-3, to put W&M in front. The Tribe pair improved to 18-5 on the year.
Juniors
Sean Joseph and
Alexander Karman put the finishing touches on the initial point of the match with a win at No. 3. Joseph's ace on match point cemented the win and lifted the Tribe duo to a 6-4 triumph over Gabriel Busato and Diego Laporta. Karman and Joseph moved to 3-1 on line three.
In a matchup of two of the top freshmen in the CAA at No. 3, Tribe rookie
Oliver Hague extended the lead to 2-0. He won the opening set from Gabriel Berner, 6-2, before the Hawk rookie took an early break lead in the second. Hague answered to pull out the second set, 6-3, for his fifth-straight win. It was his team-leading 24th win of the season, which ranks eighth in W&M history for a freshman.
After a Monmouth win at No. 1, graduate student
Konstantinos Raptis pulled the Tribe within one of the team victory. The Tribe graduate student downed Adam Hillerby, 6-3, 6-4, on line two to give W&M a 3-1 lead. He won his fourth match in a row and improved to 17-15 on the year.
W&M advances to the CAA Semifinals where it meets top seed and No. 52-ranked UNCW on Saturday. The contest carries a noon start at the Mackesy Tennis Center. The CAA Championship match is set for Sunday.
