Pierini, Chiodo Oritz Lead Lax with Hat Tricks in Setback at Elon

ELON, N.C. – The William & Mary lacrosse team fell at Elon, 18-11, on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Tribe (4-11, 0-6) trailed by just one goal, 8-7, midway through the third quarter following a score by Ainsley Huizenga, but Elon (7-7, 3-3) utilized an 8-1 run to pull away for the conference victory.
 
The Phoenix built a 5-1 lead early in the contest, but W&M chipped away at the margin and trailed by just three, 8-5, at halftime.
 
W&M scored the first two goals following intermission to draw within one, but Elon responded with the big run.

Tribe Standouts
Chloe Pierini and Sophia Chiodo Ortiz led W&M offensively, as both standouts recorded their first career hat tricks with three goals apiece.
 
Huizenga also came up big with a team-high four points (2g, 2a), while Paige Gilbert posted four draw controls and three ground balls to go with an assist.
 
Inside the Numbers
Elon outshot W&M, 31-21, which included a 26-18 margin in attempts on goal.
 
W&M owned an 18-15 advantage in ground balls and committed two fewer turnovers (15-17), but Elon controlled the draw circle, 23-8.

The Opposition
Sammy Fischer and Mia Zebley led the Phoenix with four goals apiece, while Anna Hackett and Kaitlyn Michaud also recorded hat tricks.
 
MJ Santa Barbara posted a game-high 13 draw controls.
 
Notes
Draddy totaled three draw controls and moved into third place on W&M's single-season list (61) ... Gilbert's four draw controls increased her season total to 46, which ranks tied for 10th at W&M.
