NEWARK, Del. – William & Mary baseball (20-8, 4-2 CAA) dominated on the mound in a 6-0 victory over Delaware (13-13, 3-3 CAA) to secure their sixth-straight weekend series and second conference series victory Sunday.
Nate Knowles,
Mark Hindy and
Carter Lovasz combined for the Tribe's third shutout of the season, allowing only four hits and matching the season high 15 strikeouts to clinch the CAA series over the Blue Hens. Of the three shutouts, Knowles and Lovasz have factored in on all three and Hindy has appeared in two.
Knowles posted his second one-hit outing of the week, following 3.1 shutout innings at VCU on Tuesday with 4.0 scoreless to start at Delaware. Fanning five to continue his streak of five or more shutouts in all ten appearances on the season, Knowles earned his fourth win to improve to 4-0 on the year.
Eight of Hindy's nine outs came to the tune of a strikeout, matching the Tribe's high on the season, achieved once before by Knowles on opening night. Allowing just two hits over his 3.0 innings, the redshirt sophomore made his fourth straight appearance allowing two or fewer hits, which doubled as his sixth scoreless outing of the year.
Finishing the game on the bump for the visitors, Lovasz stretched the Tribe's remarkable pitching performance through the ninth inning as he allowed only one baserunner in the final two frames. He added a pair of strikeouts to push the total to the season-high-tying mark and shut the door on the scoreless effort with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Outfielder duo
Joe Delossantos and
Henry Jackson each posted multi-hit games and accounted for five of the Tribe's six RBI on the day. Jackson smashed his first home run in the Green & Gold for a loud second hit of the day.
Catcher
Nate Goranson also joined the two-hit club on a pair of singles up the middle, recording his sixth multi-hit game of the year.
Starting the series finale off on the right foot,
Jerry Barnes III wore his 11
th pitch of the season on the first thrown at Delaware to get the leadoff man on.
Getting ahead early, as was the story in all four of the Tribe's games this week, W&M got on the board first, the second time this weekend by an RBI base knock from freshman
Anthony Greco.
Continuing to put pressure on the host team, W&M added three more runs in the second inning to take 4-0 lead.
Loading the bases,
Trey Christman led off the inning with a single through the right side,
Luca Trigiani drew a full-count walk and
Ben Parker added another walk on four pitches.
Delossantos belted his sixth double of the year for three runs, clearing the bases and taking the team lead in RBI in the process, adding his 29
th, 30
th and 31
st of the season.
Knowles retired the first eight Hens, before Delaware got its first hit of the contest. Following a walk for his only other baserunner of the outing, the junior went on to retire the next four to end his day on the bump.
Nailing down the final 6-0 lead with two more runs in the fifth inning, Greco drew a walk before Jackson took a 1-2 pitch to opposite field for his first home run in the Green & Gold.
With no more scoring for either team to follow, Hindy and Lovasz held down the Tribe's lead with five more shutout innings between the pair as W&M pulled off their 20
th win of the year in dominant fashion.
