WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The William & Mary lacrosse team outscored Monmouth in the second half and nearly rallied back from a late three-goal deficit, but it was edged by the Hawks, 14-13, on Sunday afternoon.
Trailing by three goals with a little more than 2 minutes remaining, W&M (4-7, 0-2) charged back with scores by
Paige Gilbert and
Chloe Pierini and had an opportunity to tie the contest in the waning seconds but
Serena Jacobs' shot on goal was saved by Monmouth goalie, Katie Sullivan.
Although W&M trailed by four at halftime, 9-5, it opened the third quarter with a 3-0 run to draw within one late in the third quarter following a goal by
Ainsley Huizenga.
While the Hawks (5-5, 1-2) responded with a 3-0 spurt of their own, the Tribe countered with another 3-0 run to trail by just one, 12-11, midway through the fourth quarter.
After back-to-back goals by Monmouth extended the margin to 14-11, with less than 3 minutes remaining, W&M won the contest's final three draws to help mount its comeback bid.
W&M outscored Monmouth in the second half, 8-5, but the Hawks never trailed during the contest.
Tribe Standouts
Gilbert led W&M by matching a career high with six goals to go with four draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Kate Draddy also came up big with three points (1g, 2a), five draw controls and a ground ball, while Huizenga totaled two points (1g, 1a) and five draw controls.
Serena Jacobs found the back of the cage twice.
Inside the Numbers
W&M outshot MU, 39-33, which included a 30-25 margin in attempts on goal.
The Tribe also dominated the draw circle, 19-10, and held a 19-17 edge in ground balls.
Monmouth committed three fewer turnovers, 12-15.
The Opposition
Danielle McNeely led Monmouth with five points (2g, 3a), three draw controls, three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Mya Brock and Maddie Flynn both recorded hat tricks.
Sullivan posted 17 saves and a .567 save percentage.
