NORFOLK, Va. – William & Mary Baseball continued in its winning ways on Wednesday afternoon, posting its fifth consecutive victory in a 17-6 win over Norfolk State in seven innings.
The Tribe improves to 15-6 on the season following the win, while the Spartans fall to 7-13.
In the second of two meetings with Norfolk State this season, the Tribe earned their second run-rule victory – also beating the Spartans at home, 13-2, earlier in the season.
Over the Tribe's last five games, they have outscored their opponents 81-28, posting double-digit runs in every contest (20-6, 13-7, 15-3, 16-6, 17-7). For the seventh time this season and the third-consecutive game, W&M won by a margin of 10 or more runs.
Ben Parker and
Josiah Seguin led the Tribe with multiple hits on the day, each belting a home run. In a perfect 3-3 day for Parker, he was just a double shy of hitting for the cycle, with both his homer and triple coming in the same inning. Seguin posted a team-high 5 RBI and launched a grand slam for his third home run in a week's time.
Travis Garnett earned his first win in the Green & Gold, going 1.2 innings of relief without allowing a run. With a pair of strikeouts, the lefty brought his season total to 11 K's in 5.2 innings of relief. He gave up a hit and a walk in the bottom of the third but paired one of his strikeouts with a double play to post his third scoreless outing of the year.
Six stolen bases marked a season high for the Tribe, three of those swiped by
Joe Delossantos for his ninth, 10
th and 11
th of the season. Parker,
Henry Jackson and
Trey Christman accounted for the other three. Five of the game's six occurred in the fourth inning.
Freshman
Anthony Marano got the nod for the Tribe, starting on the bump for the second-straight Wednesday. The Spartans got a lone run across in the first inning on a fielder's choice, but Marano worked his way out of a jam to strand three Spartans and limit the Spartans to one.
The Tribe responded with a five-run second inning. Jackson led off the second with a single into left field and
Witt Scafidi drew a four-pitch walk to follow.
Luca Trigiani laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the pair and Christman added another walk for W&M.
Ahead 1-0 in the count with bases loaded, Seguin smashed his third home run of his career to right field for a grand slam.
Delossantos drive in the final run of the inning on a single up the middle to score
Lucas Carmichael, who was on base from a walk.
The Spartans got one back in the second inning on an RBU double, but the Tribe had worked up a 5-2 lead through two.
Garnett entered the game in the second with one on and one out, securing two quick outs to end the inning. His lone hit came in the third, a single to center field, but he shut down the Spartans in a scoreless frame to end his outing.
Ten runs crossed in the next two innings for the Green & Gold in a seven-run fourth and three-run fifth inning.
Parker was the story of the fourth inning, leading off with a first-pitch home run that carried well beyond the right field wall. As the Tribe batted around in the inning, Parker belted a two-out triple for his third hit of the day, totaling seven bases in the fourth frame alone.
Also an impressive fourth-inning feat, Delossantos stole three bases in the inning, twice following his reaching on an error and once more after he was hit by a pitch in his second at-bat.
Christman, Carmichael and Parker each notched a pair of RBI in the fourth and Trigiani added one of his own on a sacrifice fly.
Witt Scafidi picked up his first extra-base hit in Green & Gold, ripping a double to left field and then coming around to score on Seguin's second hit of the day.
Christian Rush tallied an RBI on a bases-loaded walk.
Derek Holmes singled through the left side for his first hit of the season, driving Seguin to score and putting the Tribe up 15-2.
The Spartans added four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, aided by a pair of Tribe errors.
Corey Adams and Jackson drove in the final pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the 11-run lead.
Reed Interdonato entered in the closing role, going two scoreless frames to keep the Tribe on top for the victory.
