Women's Tennis Drops Nail-Biter to Reigning MAC Champions Toledo

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In a match-up of reigning conference champions, William & Mary suffered a nail-biting 4-3 loss to Mid-American Conference Champion Toledo on Saturday afternoon at the Summit Tennis Academy.
 
W&M (3-2) claimed the doubles point with wins at the top two positions to go along with singles wins from junior Hedda Gurholt at No. 2 and graduate student Mila Mejic at No. 3. The Rockets (4-3) though won four of the six singles matches to pull out the team triumph.
 
How it Happened
- Graduate student Yu Chen and junior Emma Fernald rolled at the top doubles position, upending Sanjana Tallamraju and Julia Kuszynski, 6-1. Chen and Fernald improved to 3-1 at No. 1.
- Junior Ine Stange and Gurholt clinched the initial point of the match with a tiebreaker over Cassie Alcala and Gaby Rondon, 7-6 (6). The Tribe tandem won its third in a row improving to 4-1.
- Gurhult ran her win streak to seven straight with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Rondon at No. 2. The reigning CAA Player of the Year upped her mark to 13-2.
- At No. 6, freshman Francesca Davis dropped two tiebreakers to Toledo sophomore Audrey Moutama, including the second set in a marathon 13-11 breaker.
- The balance at the match came down to two three-set matches at No. 3 and No. 4.
- Mejic rallied from a set deficit to down Sanjana Tallamraju at No. 3. After the Rocket player won the opening set, 6-3, the Tribe graduate student bounced back with a tiebreaker win in the second, 7-6 (5), before taking the third, 6-3. It was her fifth win of the year.
- The Rockets notched a come-from-behind three-set win of their own at No. 4 to secure the team triumph.
