NORFOLK, Va.—The William & Mary women's basketball team fell in their 100
th meeting with Old Dominion, 63-39, on Tuesday night in Norfolk.
Bella Nascimento scored 15 points to lead the Tribe. The effort marked her sixth straight game in double figures, tying a career-best for consecutive games with 10 or more points.
The Monarchs took control from the jump, scoring the game's opening five points before a
Kayla Beckwith layup put W&M (1-5, 0-0 CAA) on the board and made it 5-2 with 7:37 to go in the first.
Known for their defense, ODU (5-1, 0-0 SBC) flexed that muscle for the remainder of the quarter going on a 10-4 run to take a 15-6 lead after one.
The Tribe shot 3-for-14 from the floor in the first 10 minutes.
Kayla Rolph knocked down a jumper 90 seconds into the second, but the Monarch lead would grow to 29-8 with 4:20 to play before a Tribe timeout.
The W&M offense began to show some life as the clock wound down in the half, with Nascimento and
Anahi-Lee Cauley each scoring before
Jana Sallman added four of her own off the bench.
Sallman would finish with eight points on the evening, passing her career-high of seven she set playing for Memphis last year.
As the halftime buzzer sounded ODU held a lead of 33-16.
Nascimento would drain the Tribe's first triple of the ball game with 7:56 to go in the third, making it 37-21. That was as close as W&M would get for the rest of the game however, as the score read 49-27 after three.
Sallman, Nascimento and
Marley Long would be the ones responsible for the Tribe's 12 points in the fourth, as the game finished 63-39 and the Monarchs grabbed their fifth straight win.
Beckwith finished as W&M's third leading scorer with six. The Green and Gold finished shooting 28% from the floor and 2-of-20 from deep.
ODU shot 37% and was 5-for-17 from behind the arc while also controlling the glass 42-35.
Alexa Mikeska and Cauley tied for the team-high in rebounds with five, while Mikeska's three assists also led the team.
