Alessandra Anghel hits a backhand from the baseline in the second round of the ITA Atlantic Region Singles Championship at Virginia.

Francesca Davis and Hedda Gurholt Advance in ITA Atlantic Region Doubles Championship

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – William & Mary junior Alessandra Anghel notched her first career nationally-ranked singles win and the Tribe doubles team of sophomore Francesca Davis and senior Hedda Gurholt advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Atlantic Region Championships on Saturday.
 
Davis and Gurholt, who are a No. 9-16 seed, won for the second-straight day, downing the Longwood team of Feline Eijkelenburg and Oriana Izarram, 8-4. They improved to 6-0 as a team over the last two years. The Tribe pair advanced to meet the No. 6 seed of Lidiia Rasskouskaia and Victoria Matasova from ODU in the round 16 on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
 
In singles, Anghel opened the day with a three-set win over nationally-ranked Melodie Collard of Virginia in the second round of the main singles draw. The Tribe senior rolled in the opening set, 6-0, over the No. 91-ranked player in the country, before Collard, who was the No. 4 seed in the tournament, answered with a 6-3 win in the second. Anghel took the match with a 6-3 win in the third, her sixth victory of the fall.
 
Anghel's run in the singles draw came to a close in the round of 16 at the hands of No. 9-16 seed Danielle Hack of Maryland, 6-3, 6-3.
 
In the consolation singles draw, senior Ine Stange picked up a pair of wins to advance to the quarterfinals. She downed Richmond's Abby Lee, 7-5, 6-3, before upending Radfords's Michela  Stephens 7-5, 6-1. Stange moved to 6-3 on the year and faces West Virginia's Mille Haagensen at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday
 
Sunday begins at 9:30 a.m. with one round of singles followed by the round of 16 and the quarterfinals.
