CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.  – William & Mary women's tennis advanced a trio of singles players and two doubles teams to the second round of the ITA Atlantic Region Championships on Friday afternoon.
 
Seniors Hedda Gurholt and Alessandra Anghel, and junior Sia Chaudry each posted straight-sets singles wins to advance to Saturday. In doubles, Gurholt teamed with sophomore Francesca Davis, who are a No. 9-16 seed, and Chaudry with freshman Mira Kernagis to post wins and move to the next round.
 
In singles, Gurholt topped Howard's Sifa Butcher, 7-6 (5), 6-2, while Anghel downed Georgetown's Emily Novikov, 7-6 (0), 6-3. Both players notched their fifth wins of the fall. Chaudry evened her fall ledger at 3-3 behind a 7-5, 6-1 first-round victory over Norfolk State's Sofiya Tsitavets.
 
All three Tribe players face seeded players in round two on Saturday. Gurholt draws No. 9-16 seed Martina Genis Salas of Virginia. Anghel will also face a Cavalier opponent in No. 4-seeded Melodie Collard, who is also ranked No. 91 nationally. Chaudry meets the event's No. 7 seed Kasllista Liu of Maryland in the second round.
 
In doubles action, Davis and Gurholt, who are a No. 9-16 seed, rolled to a first-round win over the Howard team of Sifa Butcher and Ava Chambers. The Tribe tandem dropped just one game in a dominating 8-1 win. Davis and Gurholt improved to 5-0 as a team over the last two years and will take on the Longwood team of Grace Li and Parvathi Shanker in the second round on Saturday.
 
Kernagis and Chaudry won a tiebreaker, 8-7 (5), over Howard's Nadia Pegram and Imani Jean in the opening round of doubles. The Tribe pair faces the No. 1 seed Melodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky of Virginia, who are also ranked No. 3 nationally, in the second round on Saturday.
 
The ITA Atlantic Region Championships continue on Saturday, Oct. 19. The day will include both the second and third round of singles as well as the second round of the doubles.
