HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.—Jillian O'Toole's 40
th minute strike was the difference on Thursday night, as the William & Mary women's soccer team picked up a crucial win at Hofstra, 1-0.
With the victory W&M (7-0-5, 4-0-2) pushes their unbeaten streak to 12, the best to start a season in program history and tied for the third longest unbeaten streak.
The game began with a feeling-out process, but eventually turned into the action-packed matchup that was expected between two teams near the top of the CAA table.
The match's first shot came from Hofstra (7-3-1, 4-1-1), but not until the 27
th minute.
A free kick by the Pride sent the ball into the box, bouncing over
Zoe Doughty's head and seeming bound for goal.
Ginny Delacruz quickly sprang into action, getting to the ball a foot shy of the goal line to clear it safely away.
Lindsay Wilson and
Elaina Longjohn each got shots off for the Tribe in the following moments, but it wasn't until the 40
th minute that the Green and Gold broke the scoreless tie.
Wilson orchestrated the play, leaving the ball off just outside the box for O'Toole who charged in to fire a missel over the keeper's head and into the back of the net to make it 1-0 W&M.
The goal was the first of O'Toole's career while Wilson picked up the sixth point of her freshman campaign.
The match remained 1-0 Tribe heading to the half with W&M leading in shots 4-2.
The Pride, previously unbeaten in conference play, was the aggressor for the majority of the second half but struggled to solve the Tribe's backline.
Hofstra got three shots off in the opening seven minutes of the half, with Doughty picking up a save and the other two missing just high.
The Tribe responded with shots from Longjohn,
Ivey Crain and Delacruz but were unable to expand their lead as the match hit the 66
th minute.
The Pride went on to take the final seven shots of the match, but the Tribe defense stood tall, anchored by Doughty who made three saves down the stretch.
Hofstra's most threatening chance to equalize came in the 82
nd minute when a Pride attacker shook free to get a clean look at goal. The shot whizzed by Doughty, but rattled the right post and the Tribe maintained their 1-0 lead.
After Doughty made saves in the 86
th and 89
th minute the match concluded and W&M remained unbeaten.
Hofstra outshot the Tribe 11-5 in the second half but had all five of their shots on goal saved by Doughty. The clean sheet was the Green and Gold's 16
th shutout in their last 17 wins, and the 22
nd time they've blanked an opponent in the last two-plus seasons.
