Four Advance to Singles Finals on Day 1 of Tribe Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis opened the fall season with a strong showing on day one of the 28th Tribe Invitational. As a team, the Green and Gold went 12-6 in singles action and 3-1 in doubles.

Four Tribe individuals – juniors Alessandra Anghel and Hedda Gurholt, freshman Francesca Davis and sophomore Yaelle Vaissaud – picked up two singles wins on Saturday to advance to the final of their respective draws.

In her first action at W&M, Anghel notched a pair of three-set victories over all-conference opponents to earn a spot in the finals of the Green Draw. She rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 10-2 win over Penn's Gavriella Smith, before topping Liberty's Maria Parra Romero, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 10-5. Smith was a Second Team All-Ivy League pick last year, while Romero was First Team All-ASun. Anghel will face Penn's Esha Velaga in the final on Sunday at noon at the McCormack-Nagelson Tennis Center.

Gurholt did not drop a set in rolling to the finals of the Gold Draw. The reigning CAA Player of the Year bounced Virginia Tech's Sabina Richtrova, 6-3, 6-1, before besting Liberty's Tiffany Nguyen, 6-2, 6-0, in the semifinals. Gurholt now has 46 wins over her Tribe career. She meets Liberty's Esther Lovato in the finals at noon on Sunday at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.

Davis turned in an impressive showing in her first collegiate action, winning twice on Saturday to advance to the finals of the Black Draw. She upended Richmond's Polina Shitkova, 6-1, 6-4, to open the day and downed ECU's Martina Muzzolon in three sets in the semifinals. Davis meets Marina Davtyan of Liberty in the finals at noon on Sunday at the McCormack-Nageslen Tennis Center.

Vaissaud rounded out the Tribe finalists with a pair of straight-set wins in the White Draw on Saturday. She defeated ECU's Isabella Ortiz, 7-5, 6-4, in the quarterfinals and rolled past Towson's Olivia Rothfeld, 6-1, 6-4, in the semifinals. She will meet Liberty's Maria Turchetto in the finals on Sunday at noon at the Mackesy Tennis Center.

Graduate students Yu Chen (Green) and Mila Mejic (Gold), junior Ine Stange (Black) and freshman Parker Debnam (Grey) each posted wins in the opening rounds of their draws before falling in the semifinals.

In doubles, Gurholt and Stange topped Virginia Tech's Laima Frosch and Sabrina Richtrova, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Draw. Mejic and Davis picked up a 6-2 win as well downing ECU's Isabella Oritz and Anne Lou Champion in the Tribe Draw. Those Tribe tandems advanced to the semifinals on Sunday.

Debnam and Vaissaud won their semifinal match in the All-In Doubles Draw, downing ECU's Joan Madi and  Noelle Talarek, 6-3, on Saturday.

The final day of the Tribe Invitational kicks off with two rounds of doubles at 9 a.m. and the final round of singles to follow at noon. The event will be held at both the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center and the Mackesy Tennis Center.
