WILLIAMSBURG, Va.—The William & Mary women's soccer team remained unbeaten in dominating fashion on Thursday night, defeating George Mason 4-0 at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
With the victory the Tribe are unbeaten through five matches for the first time since 2013.
W&M was in charge of the match from the start, putting pressure on the Patriots' back line early and often but coming up empty handed on their first eight shot attempts. The Tribe broke through in the 38
th minute when
Madison Moon lofted a corner kick that bounced around the six-yard box before being put home by
Lindsay Wilson. The goal was Wilson's first of her young college career, but she wasn't done just yet.
The freshman from Scituate, Mass. was at it again just six minutes later when
Molly Widderich was able thread a pass to Wilson who danced through traffic and scored with a left foot strike to put William & Mary up 2-0 in the 44
th minute.
The hosts picked up right where they left off in half number one, applying pressure to the Patriots in the early parts of the second half. The Tribe outshot George Mason 19-4 on the night and didn't allow a single Mason shot in the first 75 minutes.
Maya Haghighi pushed the W&M advantage to 3-0 in the 74
th minute with her first career goal. Haghigi was the beneficiary of some quick passes by Wilson and
Marisa McClure off a free kick and converted on a shot from 20 yards out into the left corner of the net.
Ava Marvin joined in on the first career goal party in the 81
st minute. The Leesbrug, Va. native put the game further out of reach when she beat the George Mason keeper on a breakaway to provide the final score of 4-0.
The unbeaten mark through five games is just the fourth instance for the Tribe in the last 20 years. Among the teams to achieve the feat were the aforementioned 2013 squad and the 2011 Tribe who finished the year 17-3-2 and won the CAA Championship.
W&M had 10 shots on goal for the evening, the second time they have placed 10 shots on-frame already this season.
For reference, the last time the Tribe recorded multiple games with double-digit shots on goal was 2017, while only having 10-plus shots on goal three times in the last five seasons combined.
William & Mary has still only allowed one goal this season, improving on their goals against average which is already tops in the CAA.
