Baseball Finishes Home Slate With Big Comeback Win

WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - As has been the case so many times this season, William & Mary found late inning magic to secure a win, and in this case a series at Plumeri Park as the Tribe defeated Northeastern 6-5 Sunday afternoon to clinch a series victory over the Huskies. It was a five-run seventh, punctuated by a three-run game-tying double from Nate Goranson followed by a go-ahead single from Tank Yaghoubi that pushed the Tribe ahead of Northeastern.

Tom Mayer was spectacular out of the bullpen allowing just five hits and zero earned runs while striking out six in 4.0 innings of work to earn his second win of the year. Rojo Prarie worked a scoreless pair of innings to earn save number five on the season.

Yaghoubi was 2-4, recording his third straight multi-hit game. Luca Danos had a pair of hits, scored a run, and knocked in one, and Lucas Carmichael was 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

With the win, William & Mary moves to 15-12 in conference play and 32-20 overall. The Tribe wrapped up the home schedule with a 22-8 mark at Plumeri Park.

Northeastern wasted no time getting on the board as the visitors took advantage of a defensive mistake from William & Mary. Three Tribe fielders lost a pop up in the sun to extend the first before Alex Lane hit a two-run shot and Cam Maldonado followed with a solo blast to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.

The Huskies would tack on a run in the third on a fielder's choice. In the fourth, a lead off single and a pair of Tribe errors would lead to Northeastern's fifth run of the ballgame. The Tribe found the scoreboard in the fifth as Carmichael lifted a double off the wall in right center to score Noah Zertuche.

After a pair of shutdown innings from Mayer, the Tribe would erase the Northeastern advantage and take the lead in the seventh. Jerry Barnes III would lead off with a walk and score on a single from Danos. Carmichael and Williamson followed with singles to load the bases before Goranson lifted a three-run double to clear the bases and tie the game at 5-5. Joe Delossantos was hit by a pitch and stole second before coming in on Yaghoubi's single into left to make it 6-5 Tribe.

Prairie retired the side in order in the eighth, but Northeastern would make things interesting in the ninth. The Huskies led off the inning with back to back singles, but Rojo would sit down the next three men to preserve the win.

Up next: The Tribe will travel to Wilmington to finish up the regular season with a three-game set with UNCW beginning Thursday evening.
