Big Second Half Propels Lax Past Elon, 18-7, on Senior Day

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team concluded its season with a lopsided 18-7 victory against Elon on Senior Day at Martin Family Stadium.
 
W&M (8-8, 3-4) limited Elon (4-12, 0-7) to just two goals in the second half and finished the contest on a 10-0 run to secure the season-ending conference win.
 
Although the Phoenix led 3-0 after the first quarter, the Tribe outscored Elon 6-2 in the second stanza to take a one-goal lead at halftime.
 
Both teams netted two goals apiece midway through the third quarter before W&M dominated down the stretch.
 
Following the triumph, W&M honored its five seniors – Sarah Cipolla, Caroline Donovan, Claudia Hoeg, London Simonides and Sydney Sloan.  
 
Tribe Standouts
Simonides finished her career in spectacular fashion, as she totaled a career-high five goals to go with an assist.
 
Justyce Barber (3g, 1a) and Paige Gilbert (3g) also posted hat tricks, while Sarah Cipolla (2g, 4a) and Serena Jacobs (2g, 4a) added six points apiece. Cipolla also recorded a game-high nine draw controls to finish her career as the program's career record holder (177). Additionally, her 68 draw controls this season ranks second on W&M's single-season list.
 
Ainsley Huizenga was also outstanding on the draw circle and collected seven draws, while Caroline Hertzberg tallied five draw controls and two caused turnovers.
 
Goalie Elise Palmer recorded a .615 save percentage and tallied eight stops in 50:24 minutes of action.  
 
Inside the Numbers
W&M outshot Elon, 40-29, including a 28-16 margin on goal.
 
The Tribe also dominated the draw circle, 21-8, which included a 13-3 advantage in the second half.
 
Both teams totaled 17 ground balls apiece, while Elon committed one fewer turnover (13-14).

The Opposition
Sammy Fisher led Elon with three goals, while Hannah McCarthy also registered three points (2g, 1a).
 
Julia Dalmass totaled a team-high four ground balls.
