Pitching Stellar As Tribe Sweeps Red Storm

WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - As it has been for much of the 2023 season, William & Mary's (18-11) pitching was masterful in a 3-2 win over St. John's Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park. Three Tribe arms limited the Johnnies to three hits and allowed just one earned run in the game, as the Green and Gold swept St. John's for the team's fifth straight win and third straight series victory.

Carter Lovasz picked up the win tossing the final three innings without giving up a hit. Lovasz struck out a pair and allowed just one base runner in his 3.0 innings of work. Zach Tsakounis worked the middle innings allowing one earned run over 2.0, and striking out a pair.

Nate Knowles was phenomenal for the Tribe, the starter gave up a lead off single to start the game before retiring the next 12 men he faced. Knowles did not issue a walk and struck out five in his four scoreless frames. The Tribe issued just one walk all afternoon.

Both starters were able to hold the opposition scoreless through two frames, but the Green and Gold would break the deadlock in the third. Joe Delossantos would come through with a two-out RBI double into left scoring Luca Danos to give the Tribe a one-run lead.

Kevin Michaels would tie things up for St. John's with one swing of the bat in the fifth, driving a 1-1 pitch over the wall for a solo home run, his first of the season. The Red Storm would take advantage of a Tribe error in the top half of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead.

William & Mary would tie the game in the bottom half of the sixth behind a pair of freshmen manufacturing a run. Tank Yaghoubi led off with a single and advanced to third after two wild pitches. Yaghoubi would trot home on a sac fly to deep center from Corey Adams to tie it 2-2.

It would be Adams once again in the eighth to give the Tribe the lead. Nate Goranson would be hit by a pitch and move to third on Yaghoubi's second hit of the afternoon. Goranson scored on an Adams grounder to short to make it 3-2. Lovasz would work around a lead off hit by pitch in the ninth to retire the final three men of the game and preserve the sweep.

Up Next: The Tribe will travel to Maryland for a midweek showdown with the Terrapins Tuesday evening. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network .
