NEW YORK, N.Y. – The William & Mary lacrosse team overcame an early five-goal deficit with a dominant second half performance to earn an impressive 14-10 victory at Columbia on Tuesday afternoon.
Playing in snowy conditions, W&M (3-4) trailed 5-0 midway through the second quarter before charging back by scoring five of the next six goals during a span of more than 13 minutes.
Although Columbia (3-4) answered and led 9-7 midway through the fourth quarter, the Tribe outscored the Lions, 7-1, during the final 7:03 to secure the non-conference victory.
Tribe Standouts
Goalie
Elise Palmer was outstanding and totaled a season-high 18 saves with a .643 save percentage. She also recorded three ground balls and a caused turnovers.
Maresa Moyer tallied a team-high four points (2g, 2a), while
Serena Jacobs,
Sam Van Gieson and
Sophia Chiodo Ortiz also found the back of the cage twice apiece. The quartet of standouts was among a group of 10 Tribe players who scored at least one goal.
Sarah Cipolla added a team-high seven draw controls to go with three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Inside the Numbers
Columbia outshot W&M 42-30, including a 28-10 margin on goal, but the because of Palmer's outstanding effort the Tribe owned an 18-6 advantage in saves.
W&M had a 21-20 edge in ground balls, while Columbia controlled the draw circle (16-9).
Both teams committed 16 turnovers.
The Opposition
Dani Falcone led Columbia with six points (3g, 3a), eight draw controls and three ground balls, while Cecelia Messner also posted a hat trick with three goals.
