WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary played 80 minutes of scoreless field hockey with Hofstra on Friday evening at Busch Field, before the visitor outlasted the home side in a shootout, 4-2.
For the game, W&M outshot Hofstra (5-6, 1-2 CAA), 18-11, and generated nine corners compared to four for the visitors. In the end, the Pride converted all four of its shootout chances with the winner coming from Cami Valor.
Hofstra goalkeeper Pieke Roos came up with two stops in the shootout, including blocking a penalty stroke to change the momentum on the Tribe's third chance. It was the second time in three seasons that W&M and Hofstra played to a shootout with the last time coming in 2021 and the Tribe posting a 3-2 win.
W&M's best chance of regulation came in the 54th minute. Graduate students
Lonica McKinney and
Lauren Curran combined as the former found the ladder in the middle of the circle. Unfortunately, Curran's redirect went wide of the left post.
The Tribe had three chances during a penalty corner sequence in the first OT. After the initial chance by Moon was blocked, Roos made two pick saves on shots from freshman
Josie Mae Gruendel and Curran in the 66th minute.
W&M had a number of penalty corner opportunities throughout the match, but could not find the mark. The Tribe generated three in the second quarter and four in the fourth frame.
Senior
Maddie George came up big in cage for W&M to keep the Pride off the scoreboard until the shootout. She finished the night with a season-high seven saves. George stopped one shot in the first OT and two in the second, including denying multiple breakaway chances.
On the other side, Roos posted the shutout behind nine saves.
Curran led W&M with eight shots, including five on goal.
