WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Facing a challenging match-up in its season opener, William & Mary men's tennis suffered a 7-0 setback to No. 11-ranked Baylor on Friday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
How It Happened
- In doubles, graduate student
Bill Duo and senior
George Davis battled tough with the No. 4-ranked doubles team in the country of Finn Bass and Juampi Mazzuchi at the top position. On serve at 5-4, the match was abandoned after the Bears won the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3.
- Baylor increased its lead to 3-0 with straight-set wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
- Graduate student
Joseph Brailovsky went toe-to-toe with No. 23-ranked Finn Bass, before the Baylor All-American clinched the team victory. Brailovsky led early in the opening set, before Bass rallied to take a 6-3 win. The Bear senior held off Brailovsky in the second, 6-4.
- At the top singles position, Davis just missed an upset of Tadeas Paroulek. The Tribe senior jumped out to a lead in both sets, but the Baylor junior, who was ranked as high as No. 39 last season, rallied to pull out a narrow 7-5, 7-5 victory.
- Graduate student
Daniel Pellerito and sophomore
Alexander Karman rallied to force third sets at No. 5 and No. 6. After dropping the first set, 7-5, Pellerito won the second set, 6-4, on line five. Baylor's Ethan Muza came on strong in the tiebreaker, pulling out a 10-5 win. At No. 6, Karman also won the second set, 6-4, but the Bears' Zsombor Velcz claimed the third for the victory.
