W&M Women's Basketball Falls on the Road at Towson

TOWSON, Md. — A quick-scoring start wasn't quite enough for the William & Mary women's basketball team on Friday evening as the Tribe fell 75-43 to Towson at SECU Arena.

Graduate student Sydney Wagner led the way for W&M with 11 points, the 12th time this season she's crested the double-digit scoring mark. Riley Casey added nine points, while junior Rebekah Frisby-Smith had six points to go along with four rebounds.

The Green and Gold jumped out to an early lead in the game's opening minutes, with Casey and Wagner combining to sink the squad's first three shots. With 3:59 left in the frame, W&M (6-9, 1-3) took a 10-4 lead on junior Kayla Beckwith's bucket from the low block.

Unfortunately for the Tribe, it wasn't long after that Towson hit its stride.

The Tigers (8-7, 2-2) answered W&M's early push with one of their own, closing the final 2:15 of the first with an 8-point run. Anissa Rivera capped off the offensive outburst by draining a jumper with seven seconds on the clock, giving Towson a two-point cushion after 10 minutes of play. From there, the squad continued to hit its shots and pulled away in the second quarter—going 9-of-16 from the floor and shooting a blistering 66.7% from behind the arc.

Facing a 15-point deficit heading into the second half, the Tribe did its best to close the gap but couldn't find the same rhythm from the first quarter. Despite the struggles, however, there was a bright spot in the waning moments of the third when junior Caitlin Wingertzahn connected on a shot from the top of the key to send W&M into the fourth with a bit of a jump.

Less than a minute into the quarter, Wingertzahn went 1-of-2 from the line, and Frisby-Smith followed up just over two minutes later with her second 3-pointer of the night to cut into the Towson lead, making it 58-37. But that was as close as the Tribe would get.

Freshman Kayla Rolph finished with a team-high seven rebounds, and Wingertzhan recorded a pair of blocks.

Up Next: The Tribe returns to Kaplan Arena on Sunday afternoon for a matchup against Drexel. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on FloHoops.
