HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Freshman
Ivey Crain scored twice and William & Mary pitched a shutout in picking up its first win at Hofstra since 2016 and extending its unbeaten streak to four on Sunday afternoon.
Crain, who also scored in the Tribe's Thursday night draw with Stony Brook, founded the back of the net once in each half to push her team-leading goal total to six. She wasted little time getting the visitors on the scoreboard.
Less than three minutes into the contest, junior
Elaina Longjohn fed the ball down the right flank to Crain. The rookie striker raced it down, carried to the top right corner of the six and finished past the Hofstra goalkeeper with the outside of her foot to open the scoring.
The Tribe (5-4-2, 1-0-1 CAA) doubled its lead early in the second half, catching the Pride in transition. Some nice passing coupled with an impressive run and finish from Crain resulted in the 2-0 lead.
Off a Hofstra free kick in the final third, senior goalkeeper
Zoe Doughty came off her line to punch out the service, setting W&M up on the counter. Longjohn and Crain combined near midfield, before the former switched fields with a pass down the left side to a wide-open
Ginny Delacruz. The Tribe back ran on it and laid the ball off into the penalty area to Crain, who was on a sprint from midfield. The Milton, Ga., native's one-timer went over the Hofstra GK to the upper 90 to extend the lead.
Longjohn, who tallied her first career assist on Thursday night, added two more on Sunday, while Delacruz added her first helper of the season and the second of her career.
Defensively, the Tribe recorded its sixth shutout of the season and third in the last four matches. Doughty totaled four saves on the afternoon in registering the clean sheet.
Hofstra (6-4-1, 1-1 CAA) outshot the Tribe, 18-9, but both teams put four chances on goal. The Pride also tallied six corner kicks compared to W&M's two.
Quotable
"Starting conference play with a five-day road trip against two tough opponents on turf is a lot of adversity, but our current group embraces the struggles and actually uses them as motivation. Everyone dug really deep today and our depth really helped as we were able to rotate lots of players with no drop off. Our team defending was stellar all 90 minutes and Ivey's two goals sealed the deal." – Head coach
Julie Shackford
