RICHMOND, Va. – William & Mary women's soccer sophomore
Emma D'Alesandro and freshman
Ivey Crain garnered Colonial Athletic Association weekly awards, the league announced on Monday. D'Alesandro earned CAA Defensive Player of the Week honor, while Crain was named the CAA Rookie of the Week for the second time.
It marks the second time this season a Tribe student-athlete has been honored with the defensive player of the week award after senior
Zoe Doughty received the distinction on Aug. 29. Crain also won the rookie of the week honor on Aug. 22 after scoring twice against Virginia Tech.
D'Alesandro earned the weekly award after anchoring a Tribe defense that picked up a pair of shutout wins last week. She played all 90 minutes at the center back position in W&M's wins over Longwood and East Carolina. The Pirates entered the week receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches National Top 25 and were coming off a 2-1 upset of No. 19 SMU in Dallas.
Crain notched a goal and an assist in the Tribe's 2-0 win over Longwood on Sept. 15. She scored her first career game-winner in the 37th minute, out racing a pair of Lancer defenders and finishing inside the far post from 12 yards out. Her back-heel pass helped set up the second Green and Gold marker in the second half. Crain leads the Tribe with eight points on three goals and two assists.
The Tribe opens Colonial Athletic Association play with two games on Long Island this week. W&M travels to new league foe Stony Brook on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 6 p.m., before heading to Hofstra on Sunday, Sept. 25, at noon. Both matches will be streamed on FloFC.
