Led by fourth-year head coach Mike London, W&M enters the 2022 season looking to build upon the success from last fall when it posted the program's most wins since 2015 and garnered a national ranking in multiple weeks. Highlighting the notable victories was a 31-18 road win at No. 4 Villanova. W&M finished the year with the CAA's most productive rushing offense and returns its top seven rushers from that productive group. Additionally, the Tribe boasted the nation's 12th-ranked rushing defense, which should continue to be a strength as it returns 11 defensive players who earned at least four starts last season.
This summer W&M received votes in both major national preseason polls - Stats Perform and AFCA Coaches. Additionally, the Tribe earned a No. 23 preseason ranking by Athlon Sports and checked in at No. 19 in the CBS Sports FCS Preseason Power Rankings.
Charlotte opened its season with a 43-13 setback at Florida Atlantic last Saturday. Although the Niners struck first with a 56-yard touchdown catch and run from Chris Reynolds to Grant DuBose, the Owls responded with 33 unanswered points. Reynolds completed 14 of 19 passes for 196 yards with two touchdowns, while DuBose posted 89 receiving yards and two scores.
Friday's game will mark the first meeting between W&M and Charlotte. The Niners played their first season in 2013 (FCS) and jumped to the FBS level in 2015. W&M is beginning its 129th season.
