CAA Champions Drop NCAA First Round Match-up to #6 NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. – Colonial Athletic Association Champion William & Mary women's tennis closed out the 2022 season in the opening round of the NCAA Championship, falling to No. 6 seed NC State on Saturday afternoon.

Facing a Wolfpack (24-5) team that owned eight top-25 wins on the season, the Green and Gold (13-9) battled tough in doubles. After an NC State win at No. 2 doubles, the Tribe's No. 3 tandem of freshmen Ine Stange and Hedda Gurholt fell in narrow fashion to Sophie Abrams and Priska Nugroho, 6-4.

Playing against the top-ranked doubles team in the country, juniors Raffaela Alhach and Elisa Van Meeteren were locked in a battle with the Wolfpack duo of Jaeda Daniel and Nell Miller. The match was abandoned with the doubles point decided and NC State leading 5-4.

Midway through singles, the match was forced indoors due to inclement weather. NC State secured advancement to the second round with straight-set singles wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4.

At the top singles post, senior Mila Saric, who is ranked No. 118 nationally, was locked in a battle of nationally-ranked players. No. 11-ranked Jaeda Daniel took the opening set in close fashion, 7-5. The match was even at one in the second when it was abandoned with the team results decided.

NC State, which advanced to the Final Four last season, meets Tennessee in the regional final on Sunday.

Saric earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Singles Championship and will compete in the national event, May 23-28. The University of Illinois will host the national championships at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Urbana, Ill.
