DURHAM, N.C.- An eight run second inning and strong pitching from a quartet of arms powered the Green and Gold to a 14-3 win at Duke Tuesday afternoon. The Tribe hit four homers including three in three pitches in a breakout second and that would be more than enough as
Zach Tsakounis,
Mike Weidinger,
Carter Lovasz, and
Nate Knowles combined to allow just three runs in the win. The victory is the team's fourth in a row, a season-high, and the program's first over an ACC opponent since the 2019 season.
Â
Tsakounis tossed three scoreless to begin the ballgame and earned his second win while lowering his ERA to an even 3.00 on the year.
Mark Trotta,
Matt Thomas, and
Cole Ragone all had multi-hit, multi-RBI games, while
Jack Cone drove in a game-high three.
Tyler Solomon knocked in a pair and scored three times, as each Tribe starter either scored or drove in a run.Â
Â
William & Mary broke the game open in the second inning with eight runs on four homers as Cone, Trotta, Thomas, and Ragone all went deep, with the latter three homering in three consecutive pitches.Â
Â
After a scoreless first inning from both sides in the first, the Tribe opened up the scoring in the second as Ben Williamosn was hit by a pitch. On a 0-1 pitch, Cone would hammer the ball over the wall in right field to give the Green and Gold a 2-0 edge.
David Hogarth followed with a double off the wall in left and
Max Winters walked before
Tyler Solomon ripped a triple, just the team's second of the season off the wall in left-center scoring both runners.Â
Â
After Solomon scored on a wild pitch, Trotta would smash a 2-1 fast ball over the monster in left, and Thomas would follow with a first pitch bomb to straight away center marking the second time this season the Tribe has gone back to back in a ballgame. Ragone would immediately get in on the action hitting the first pitch he saw just inside the foul pole in right to make it 8-0 Tribe, putting a stamp on the eight-run, four-homer inning.Â
Â
After another quiet inning from Tsakounis, William & Mary would strike again as Hogarth led off with a bunt single. He would make it to second on a throwing error and eventually come home as
Joe Delossantos shot a single through the right side.Â
Â
After two scoreless innings from the arm of freshman lefty
Mike Weidinger, the Tribe added to the lead in the top of the sixth. Trotta would walk, Ragone singled, and Williamson was once again hit by a pitch to load the bases and Cone sent a sac fly to deep right to plate the tenth run of the game.Â
Â
Duke's offense finally broke through in the sixth as the Blue Devils would load the bases on three free passes and plate a pair of runners via a single and sac fly. The Tribe would immediately get the runs back in the seventh via RBI singles from Trotta and Thomas.Â
Â
The Tribe would plate two more in the ninth, and Lovasz and Knowles would combine to retire the last six Blue Devil batters of the game to clinch the 14-3 win.Â
Â
Up Next: William & Mary will return to Plumeri Park on Friday to begin conference play and put the four-game winning streak up against UNCW. The three-game set continues Saturday and concludes Sunday afternoon.Â
