Late Run Pushes ODU Past the Tribe

NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion used a late run to overcome William & Mary, 72-62, on Wednesday night inside Chartway Arena.
 
The Tribe (4-6) used a 9-1 run capped by an Anders Nelson 3-pointer with 5:57 left to take a 53-49 lead.
 
The Monarchs (6-4) answered with 10 points in a row as part of a 17-3 run to take the lead for good. Dericko Williams, who led ODU with 11 points, scored three-straight lay-ups, including back-to-back offensive putbacks during the 10-0 spurt, to give the home team the lead.
 
Nelson highlighted the night for the Tribe, leading all scorers with 21 points to go with seven assists. He hit 9-of-14 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range.
 
The Tribe took an early 11-5 lead thanks to a 7-0 run capped by a Gabe Dorsey 3-pointer just five and a half minutes into the game. The Monarchs answered with eight in a row to take a 13-11 lead behind back-to-back 3-pointers from Bryce Baker.
 
W&M moved back in front, 17-15, on a baseline jumper from freshman Chase Lowe with 7:39 left in the opening half. The Tribe lead moved to 22-17 on a fastbreak bucket from Mullins off an ODU turnover with 5:20 left in the opening half.
 
ODU used a 7-0 run to take a two-point lead to the locker room. Chaunce Jenkins scored five in a row during the spurt and the home team led 26-24 at the break.
 
Both teams started the second half a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor. Nelson scored nine of the Tribe's first 15 points in the second. His corner 3-pointer gave W&M a 42-40 lead with 13:17 left.
 
Junior Noah Collier just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, while junior Ben Wight added 11 points and six rebounds.
 
W&M shot 44.8% from the field, including 51.6% in the second half, while ODU shot 49% overall and 57.7% in the final 20 minutes. Along with Williams, Tyreek Scott-Grayson, Jenkins and Faizon Fields each finished with 10 points for ODU.
