TOWSON, MD. - William & Mary volleyball's season came to an end Friday evening in the CAA Semifinal as the Tribe dropped a 3-2 decision to Delaware. The Green and Gold finished the season with a 12-14 record, the most wins by a William & Mary volleyball team since the 2013 season.
Â
A common theme from the entire season, the Tribe refused to quit bouncing back at every turn Friday night. After dropping sets one and three, coach Doyle's team responded in sets two and four. When falling behind 14-8 in the fifth, the Tribe rallied to tie the set 14-14 facing five straight set points.Â
Â
Maddie Meyers was named to the All-Tournament team after a historic effort in which the outside hitter produced a 15-kill, 21-dig double-double.
Nicole Smith (15) and
Eleanor Stothoff (12) also provided double-digit kills, while
Emma Minnick and
Amy Schwem dished out 26 and 20 assists respectively. Senior All-CAA selection
Anna Porter was all over the floor with 26 digs.Â
Â
Delaware took the first three points of the match, jumping out to an early lead, but three straight kills from Burrell gave the Tribe its first lead at 7-6. After the Tribe opened up a 11-7 lead, the Blue Hens rallied to tie the set at 15-15. The Hens took a 17-16 lead and would not trail again cruising to a 25-18 win. Burrell led all players with five kills in the frame and Minnick had six assists.Â
Â
In the second it was the Green and Gold starting out hot, taking the first six points. The Tribe would never trail on the way to a 25-16 dominating second set win. The Tribe hit .303 in the frame to Delaware's .108. Smith nailed six kills to push the Tribe offense to take the frame.Â
Â
Meyers came alive for six kills in a back and forth third frame. The Tribe threatened late behind four straight points, but the Blue Hens would hit .235 to the Green and Gold's .178 to come away with a 25-22 third set win.Â
Â
The Blue Hens kept momentum taking the first three points of the fourth frame. The Tribe would rally to tie the score 6-6 before Delaware found separation in a 12-8 lead. A block and a kill from Smith would draw William & Mary even at 16-16. The Hens broke out again, this time to a 19-16 edge, but once again the Tribe answered, tying the stanza at 20-20 behind kills from Meyers and Stothoff. A kill and block on back to back plays from Smith gave the Tribe its first lead in the frame at 23-22. A Delaware error would give the Tribe the 25-23 lead to force a fifth.
Â
Meyers opened up the fifth with her 14th kill of the night, but the Blue Hens were the first to five with a 5-4 edge. A block by
Sydney Taylor and
Olivia Esposito would tie the frame 5-5 but Delaware would go on a 6-0 run to open an 11-5 edge. The Hens would open up a 14-8 edge, but the Tribe rallied once again rallying off six straight to make it 14-14. However, Delaware would take the final two points to win a dramatic 16-14 match, sending the Hens to the CAA Championship.
